Ruth Snyder Fiscus, 82

December 18, 2012

Ruth Snyder Fiscus, 82, a longtime resident of Brookville, passed away peacefully at the Laurel Brook Assisted Living Facility on Dec. 18, 2012.

She was born on Aug. 10, 1930, in Ringgold, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Maurice W. and Veda G. (McGaughey) Snyder.

She worked for 18 years at the Truckstops of America, where she made many friends throughout the years and attended the Immaculate Conception and St. Dominic Catholic churches.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crossword puzzles, cooking and canning.

Lady Chucks grind out road victory over Lady Bison

CLEARFIELD — Winning can either be exciting and high scoring or lower scoring and methodical.

After racing past rival Brookville last Thursday, Punxsy grinded out a road victory, 39-29, over Clearfield on Monday night in Clearfield.

“It was a grind-out game. We didn’t shoot the ball well from the perimeter but we played very good defense and had very good ball pressure,” noted Lady Chucks coach Randy Reitz. “We also did a very nice job on Clearfield’s big girls.”

Chucks turn up heat to defeat Wildcats

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Coming out trailing from the intermission, Punxsy turned up the second-half defensive heat to give Homer Center its first loss of the season, 64-60, Monday night in Punxsutawney.

“Our defense really is improving. We forced some key turnovers on their (Homer Center) end,” pointed out Punxsy coach Dirk Neal. “We hope this win can carry us a long way. It was a great team effort.”

Historical Society hosts Christmas Open House to showcase displays

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society has once again graced the community with its wonderfully fascinating exhibits.

This year, at their Christmas Open House, the society brought a variety of exhibits, all pertaining to the history of our town.

Guidish, Bubb honored at Rossiter Legion’s annual banquet

ROSSITER — The Rossiter American Legion Post No. 582 honored two of its members with honorable lifetime memberships at their annual Christmas party Friday at the legion hall in Rossiter.

"We honored Shawn Guidish and Dick Bubb with honorable lifetime memberships for their hard work and dedication to the club over the years," said Barbara Mack, of the Rossiter American Legion.

Preparing for the worst but praying for the best

The horrific scenes of what took place on Dec. 14 at Sandy Creek Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., were broadcast worldwide within minutes.

These were unimaginable events that have left everyone wondering how something like this could happen.

In situations such as this, I believe we never truly understand the circumstances that lead someone to resort to such heinous and destructive behavior.

Infant Ruthann Lynn Kerr, of Smicksburg, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 14, 2012, the daughter of Cheryl Lynn Shank and Thomas George Kerr.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one sister, Lacy Marie Kerr; her maternal grandfather, Merle Shank, Jr.; her godmother, Chelsea Eileen Hartzfeld; several aunts and uncles; and friend Cheryl Bottenhorn, who was at her mother’s bedside.

Ruthann was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Ruth Shank and paternal grandparents, Betty Lou and George Thomas Kerr.

Anna Marie Gould, 86

Anna Marie Gould, 86, of Mahaffey, returned to her savior Monday, Dec. 17, 2012 at her home, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Gould was born March 8, 1926, in Clearfield County, a daughter of the late Cecil C. Wolfe and Lillian (McClinsey) Wolfe.

On Oct. 21, 1950, she married Harry B. Gould, who precedes her in death.
Anna was an active member of the Mt. Carmel Church and the Ladies Aid of Clover Run, holding numerous offices over the years.

Harry "Ed" Dunkle, 82

Harry "Ed" Dunkle, 82, of Brookville, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012.

The son of Edwin McCullough Dunkle and Priscilla Dorothy Boyd Dunkle, Ed was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Sligo, Pa.

On July 23, 1954, in Brookville, he married Mabel D. "Sis" Carrier, who survives.

Ed served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

Ed served three terms as the Jefferson County Sheriff and was also a past warden of the Jefferson County Jail in Brookville.

9th-grade Chucks take third contest, defeat Raiders

December 17, 2012

BROOKVILLE — After holding a lead the entire game, the ninth-grade Chucks recorded their third-straight win of the week to defeat the Raiders, 43-36, in Brookville on Friday afternoon.

"It was a nice win and great effort," Punxsy head coach Todd Heigley said.

Dylan Huey finished with top honors for the visitors with 15 points and seven rebounds. Braxton Giavedoni also posted double digits in points with 11 to go with seven steals.
