Emma Lester Hetrick, 96

Emma Lester Hetrick, 96, Punxsutawney, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

She was born Oct. 9, 1915, in Anita, a daughter of the late Philip and Clara (Humm) Lester.

July 25, 1947, she married Fred A. Hetrick, who preceded her in death Aug. 19, 1980.

She lived all her married life in New Bethlehem.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Punxsutawney and was an avid quilter.

Surviving relatives include two step-granddaughters, one step-grandson, one step-daughter-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

CURWENSVILLE — In high school wrestling, what weight class wrestles first is determined by a random drawing. Thursday night in Curwensville, luck of the draw set the stage for the most anticipated match of the evening between Punxsy's Neko Cappella — who recently became just the third Punxsy wrestler to reach 100 wins — and Curwensville's Jake Keller — who is a two-time district champion — in the 138-pound class to be the final match of the evening.

DUBOIS — The Punxsy boys' ninth-grade basketball team earned its second win of the 2011-12 season in it's 2012 opener Tuesday afternoon at DuBois Central Catholic, 41-26.

Punxsy (2-5) jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the first quarter, and despite a strong second quarter by the Cardinals, the Chucks led at halftime and held on for the victory.

"This was by far the best game we have played all season, so far," Punxsy head cocah Brandon Krug said. "Our defense in the first quarter set the tone for the rest of the game."

Chief: Driver wouldn’t stop in 20-mile pursuit

BROOKVILLE — A Clarion woman is facing multiple charges after leading Brookville Borough Police on a nearly 20-mile pursuit Thursday afternoon along Route 322.

Police Chief Ken Dworek said the woman, who is in her mid-60s, initially did not stop for a traffic control detail along Route 322 around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

She faces charges of driving under suspension, reckless driving, attempting to elude police and multiple other traffic citations.

E. Louise Kammerdiener, 72

E. Louise Kammerdiener, 72, of Northpointe, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Nov. 17, 1939, in Redbank Township, Armstrong County, a daughter of the late Ray W. and Hazel E. (McDivitt) Kunselman.

June 1, 1963, she married Fred C. Kammerdiener, who preceded her in death Feb. 10, 2011.

Mrs. Kammerdiener was a housewife, devoting much of her time with her husband of 47 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lady Chucks rely on 'D' to defeat DCC

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Entering Wedneseday night's contest with the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals without a victory, the Punxsy Lady Chucks basketball team did what it needed to do to secure its first win of the season with another solid defensive outing, holding DCC to eight points or fewer in each quarter en route to a 33-30 victory.

Although his team earned its first win of the season in its first game of the calendar year, Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said his team wasn't going to dwell on the win too long.

Wheeling Park Duals highlighted by Neko Cappella's 100th win

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Over the Christmas holiday Dec. 28-29, the Punxsy Chucks wrestling squad traveled to Wheeling, W.Va., for the Wheeling Park Duals, and despite a 2-5 overall record, Punxsy head coach Eric Eddy said his team "wrestled well in all the matches," as all but one of the losses was decided by one match.

The tournament was highlighted for Punxsy by four wrestlers winning each of their seven matches over the two-day tournament, including Neko Cappella, who reached the 100-win milestone during the tournament.

Although it seems a bit late to be saying this, "Happy New Year, everyone!"

Five days into 2012, I hope all your New Year's resolutions are still going strong. Only 361 days left after today, thanks to the extra one thrown in for the leap year.

Personally, I'm not much for making resolutions, because for the most part, I stink at following through with them.

For myself, the turning of the page on the calendar and in my life is more about reflecting on the things that have happened over the past year and looking forward to what lies ahead in the next chapter.

Alma J. McLaughlin, 84

Alma J. McLaughlin, 84, a lifelong resident of Punxsutawney, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at UPMC-Hamot in Erie.

She was born Dec. 25, 1927, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Paul and Marie (Mahan) Melchick.

She was married to William McLaughlin, who preceded her in death in 1999.

Mrs. McLaughlin was a seamstress at Pramco in Punxsutawney for many years. She enjoyed shopping, sewing and traveling.
