PUNXSUTAWNEY — Where in the world are you today? Why, you're in Punxsutawney, the Weather Capital of the World, the home of Punxsutawney Phil, of course.

Certainly, there are cities and towns all over the world that have unusual highlights and notable residents or natives, but none of those cities and towns have the fame and notoriety possessed by Punxsutawney.

Jury foreman speaks out about Rebert trial

BROOKVILLE — A Punxsutawney man who served as the jury foreman in the Steven Rebert double-homicide trial, which concluded late Friday, said the jury became deadlocked while deliberating whether or not Rebert should be put to death.

Rebert was sentenced to life in prison by Jefferson County President Judge John H. Foradora, after the jury could not come to a consensus as to whether or not he should be put to death in the murders of Wayne and Victoria Shugar, both 61, Brockway, who were found shot to death in their home April 12, 2010.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If there was only one word to describe Ella Whitaker, the most appropriate choice would have to be “determined.” From her choice of careers, to her decision to marry, to her travels across the globe, to her ability to deal with major physical problems, the remarkable 99-year-old lady has consistently demonstrated a strong will to deal with life head-on.

Frank Albert Hetrick, 92

January 29, 2012

Frank Albert Hetrick, 92, Brookville, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012, at Golden Living in Clarion.

He was born Nov. 10, 1919, in Knox Township, a son of the late Gilbert Jackson and Clara Etta (Wolfe) Hetrick.

April 22, 1944, he married the former Betty Jane Himes, who preceded him in death Nov. 8, 1996.

Mr. Hetrick was a member of the First Baptist Church.  He was a man of strong faith and encouraged others in their own faith.

He worked on the Pittsburgh and Shawmut Railroad.

Elva I. Martino, 83

January 29, 2012

Elva I. Martino, 83, Walston, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at home.

She was born July 26, 1928, in Grange, a daughter of the late A. Merle and Elsie (Powell) Bush.

Oct. 29, 1946, she married James A. Martino, who preceded her in death Dec. 9, 2006.

She was a member of St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church of Walston.
She was a good wife and a good mother.

She worked for Loree Footwear and the Punxsutawney Area School District

Beverly Nagy, 81

January 29, 2012

Beverly Nagy, 81, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.

She was born July 5, 1930, in Mars, a daughter of the late Homer Leslie and Helen Ruby (Wulfert) Sherwood.

Jan. 15, 1999, she married John Nagy, who preceded her in death March 4, 2007.

She worked as a seamstress at Pramco and Punxsutawney Sportswear Co. in Punxsutawney.

She was a member of the Moulennaires of the Senior Citizens’ Center.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and her good friends, Jim and Sally Lantz.

Anna Raniowski, 89

January 29, 2012

Anna Raniowski, 89, Punxsutawney, passed away Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Raniowski was born July 19, 1922, in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Catherine (Kaprel) Cybak.

She was married to Matthew Raniowski, who preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Rossiter.

Mrs. Raniowski loved crossword puzzles, reading, crocheting, knitting and, most of all, her beloved grandchildren.

Punxsy native’s film scores big at Sundance

PARK CITY, Utah — After years of hard work, Punxsy native Chad Villella had the chance to experience every young filmmaker’s dream, as he was invited to attend the mecca of all independent film festivals, The Sundance Film Festival.

Villella was excited to premiere his horror film, “V/H/S,” at Sundance but also saw it as an opportunity.

“We want to enjoy the experience and also use it to get us to the next level creatively,” he said.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With five of the six top boys' basketball teams in District-IX league play within one game of first place entering Friday night, the Chucks knew they'd have their work cut out for them when they hosted DuBois. The Chucks proved to be up to the challenge with a 65-45 win.

Raider boys stomp to a victory over St. Marys

BROOKVILLE — With only two turnovers in the first half, the Brookville Raiders (12-3) did not struggle against St. Marys (7-8) Friday night and earned a league victory, 43-32.

"I think we're getting a little better (with turnovers)," Brookville head coach Bud Baughman said. "We had some really tough games against some quality opponents, and I think it's helped us. That's really the only way you get better is to play the better teams."

The Raiders' most impressive quality Friday night was their defensive abilities.
