Ex-Rusted Root drummer bringing rhythm, fun to Groundhog Day

February 1, 2012

GREENSBURG — Warm clothes and protection against the elements are necessary for attending Groundhog Day, but with former Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan attending this year, guests may also want to bring a drum.

“We’re going to have a big-good time,” said Donovan, who will appear at Gobbler’s Knob early Thursday morning and with his band, Sun King Warriors, from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. tonight in the Celebration Tent in Barclay Square. The band’s performance is sponsored by S&T Bank.

Police prepare traffic, security for governor’s visit to Punxsy

February 1, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY —
This year’s observation of Groundhog Day will be marked for several reasons: Gov. Tom Corbett’s visit to the Weather Capital of the World; good weather, which could draw more guests today and tomorrow; and the fact that the annual celebration falls closer to the weekend.

Shooting hands go cold, Lady Chucks fall

February 1, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The last time the Lady Chucks basketball team faced Brookville Dec. 15, 2011, the Lady Raiders were just too much for Punxsy's young squad to handle.

The rematch took place Tuesday night in Punxsutawney, and a more confident, experienced Lady Chucks team that has shown much improvement since that first meeting struggled to find it's rhythm early and couldn't overcome the deficit put up by Brookville's steady offense, as the Lady Raiders cruised to a 51-38 victory.

Punxsy edges victory in close mat match-ups

February 1, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy grapplers faced even match-ups Tuesday night against Hollidaysburg, and the Chucks edged just one more victory on the mat than the Tigers and earned themselves a 43-28 win.

The Tigers are running a small squad this year, and they knew going into Tuesday night's match-up they'd be giving up four forfeits. But the Chucks were having numbers issues themselves and returned the favor with three. Only seven matches took place on the mat.

Still rolling: Chucks ground Bald Eagle

February 1, 2012

WINGATE — The Punxsy Chucks basketball team traveled to Bald Eagle High School Tuesday night for an out-of-league contest and picked up a 72-63 road win to improve their record to 12-4 this season.

Punxsy head coach Dirk Neal was pleased with his team's performance, as he said the entire team contributed to the win.

"It was just a great win," he said. "We controlled the boards, and the big guys took over. We have players just coming in off the bench and giving their all when they're in there. Individual guys had big games, and all the pieces of the puzzle are really falling together."

Punxsy youth tournament a huge success

January 30, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — This past weekend, Punxsutawney Area High School played host to more than 550 total wrestlers for a pair of youth tournaments: The Groundhog Classic, open to wrestlers ages eight to 15 of all experience levels, and the Groundhog Novice Tournament, limited to wrestlers between six and 12 years of age who are in their first two years of wrestling.

Wrestlers came from all over the state to participate, and the event was a success, with the parking lot at PAHS so packed that it was difficult to find a parking space: A good problem to have at such an event.
