Glen Campbell man’s talent leads to presidency of national artists’ group

GLEN CAMPBELL — While this town of just over 300 people may not be listed among those sites for famous artists, Glen Campbell is the home of one local artist and retired teacher serving as president of a nationwide organization dedicated to advancing the cause of fine arts in America.

“I was reluctant to take the position,” said Larry Mallory, of Glen Campbell, who added that his biggest issue has always been the distance from Glen Campbell to New York City. But he realized being president of a prestigious art association is not something that happens every day, so he accepted.

Big Run still seeks way to create police

BIG RUN — Big Run Borough Council heard a possible solution to its police problems at Monday’s meeting, but actual funding for such a program is still the main obstacle.

Brian Lyons, a former Sykesville and Summerville police officer who also served as a police chief of a regional police department, said he’s been following council’s discussions about hiring a police officer for the borough.

Boys' Elementary Tourney off to great start

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With the boys' and girls' varsity teams preparing for their respective playoff games this coming Friday (girls') and next Saturday (boys'), Punxsutawney basketball fans can get their fix at the elementary boys' basketball tournament taking place all week at PAHS.

Monday night, the action kicked off with a full slate of exciting games.

Fourth- and fifth-grade: UConn 25, Villanova 23, OT

The evening started with an exciting game that couldn't be settled in regulation time, as UConn snuck by Villanova in a 25-23 overtime victory.

Saturday, PAHS' cheerleading squad traveled to Elk County Catholic for the District IX Cheerleading Team Championships. Five D-IX schools competed, with ECC taking first place. Punxsy's squad, seen here performing its routine, was coached by Julie Baun and Tracy Smith and consisted of Erin Butler, Kristen Mack, Heidi Rodgers, Holly Waltman, Morgan Smith, Tessa Spearing, Tiana Smith, Haley Hartman, Madi Meterko, Kelsey Snyder, Brittnee Tenon, Darriene London, Jade Kunselman and Kaili Wolbert.

William Brian Dinger, 47

William Brian Dinger, 47, Punxsutawney, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh.

He was born May 10, 1964, in Punxsutawney, a son of Everett Eugene Dinger of California and Marie (Wright) Swanson of Punxsutawney, who survive.

Mr. Dinger was the owner of Dinger House Painting.

He was Protestant by faith.

Dorothy (Lloyd) Gilligan, 86

Dorothy (Lloyd) Gilligan, 86, formerly of Rosebud, Coalport, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at the DuBois Nursing Home.

She was born Oct. 17, 1925, in Irvona, a daughter of the late Gwynne N. and Hazel (McGarvey) Lloyd.

She was married to Donald H. Gilligan, who preceded her in death March 12, 1998.

Mrs. Gilligan worked as a secretary for Swank Brick Yard, Irvona, and as a teacher’s aide for Coalport Elementary School.

She enjoyed traveling, camping, figurine painting and reading, and she was a life member of Coalport United Methodist Church.

Kenneth Lee Mottern, 89

Kenneth Lee Mottern, 89, Sprankle Mills, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at Mahoning Riverside Manor, Punxsutawney.

He was born June 11, 1922, a son of the late Jeremiah “Jerry” and Lulu (Caylor) Mottern.

May 24, 1948, he married his wife of 50 years, Helen (Nolph) Mottern, who preceded him in death in 1998.

Mr. Mottern was born, raised and lived his entire life around the Sprankle Mills area.

He served in World War II as a member of the 101st Airborne division, in which he received a Purple Heart for being wounded at the Battle of the Bulge.

Brookville Raiders climb to fourth at PIAA State Championship

HERSHEY — Competing at the state’s highest level is both an honor and a challenge for all of Pennsylvania’s wrestlers.

Last weekend, Brookville traveled to Hershey to compete in the PIAA Class AA State Championships, and the Raiders emerged with a fourth-place medal.

“We felt as a group we were a top-four team, possibly a top-three team,” Brookville head coach Dave Klepfer said. “We went down there, and the competition was great. To come away with fourth place, I think everybody involved was pretty happy with that.”

Daniel Grant Ruffner, 94

Daniel Grant Ruffner, 94, Marion Center, passed away Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at Hillsdale Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Hillsdale.

He was born Sept. 29, 1917, in West Mahoning Township, a son of the late Daniel C. and Emma (Fitzgerald) Ruffner.

Mr. Ruffner was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.

Prior to a lengthy illness, Mr. Ruffner made his home in Florida, before returning to Marion Center.

Surviving relatives include a sister, Mabel Peffer of Marion Center; and numerous nieces and nephews.

PASD officials navigating budget crunch

PUNXSUTAWNEY — When Gov. Tom Corbett said last year he was going to make some major cuts in the amount of funding that school districts received, he wasn't bluffing.

Public schools, which had to absorb about $860 million in spending cuts for the 2011-12 school year, will see their basic subsidies rise about $45 million to $5.4 billion, but could lose $100 million in grants that helped fund full-day kindergarten and other programs, such as dual enrollment.
