AmeriCorps helps students reach out to troops overseas

PUNXSUTAWNEY — AmeriCorps helps students in the Punxsutawney Area School District to get in touch with the rest of the world by writing letters to soldiers of the 4th Platoon stationed in Kuwait.

Wednesday, AmeriCorps member Tony Ross spoke to Punxsutawney Area School Board members about his latest project.

Ross said he obtained the names of individual members of the 4th Platoon, and students were given the opportunity to write an individual letter to a soldier serving in Kuwait.

10 Punxsy grapplers set to participate at Regional tourney today

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Last weekend, a record 10 Chucks' wrestlers qualified for the Regional Tournament, which begins today and runs through Saturday in Altoona.

Of the 10 qualifying Punxsy grapplers, five — Neko Cappella at 132 pounds; Seth Spack at 152 pounds; Carl Langley at 170 pounds; Josh Neal at 182 pounds; and Tyler Titus at 220 pounds — will be making their final runs at States, as it is their senior season.

Larry K. Adamson, 69

Larry K. Adamson, 69, Rochester Mills, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born March 10, 1942, in Marion Center, a son of the late Lester and Helen (Pifer) Adamson.

He was married to Mary Jane (Ryen) Adamson, who survives, of Rochester Mills.

Mildred Bellas, 94

March 2, 2012

Mildred Bellas, 94, formerly of Rockland Avenue, died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Wellington Heights.

She was born May 7, 1917, in Idamar, a daughter of the late John and Catherine (Cicaniak) Kutney.  

She was the last surviving member of her family.

Nov. 25, 1939, she married Dominick Joseph Bellas, who preceded her in death July 6, 1990.

They were married for 50 years.

She was a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church.

Mrs. Bellas enjoyed her family and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed crocheting.

Earl T. Keslar, Jr., 87

March 2, 2012

Earl T. Keslar, Jr., 87, Harrisburg, formerly of Punxsutawney, passed away at home Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012.

Surviving relatives include a daughter Susannah Keslar; and a granddaughter, Stacy Keslar, both of Harrisburg.

A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hetrick-Bitner Funeral Home, Harrisburg.

Mildred Bellas, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, March 1, 2012, at Wellington Heights, Punxsutawney.

Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of Shumaker Funeral Home Inc., Punxsutawney.

Alexis Jane Clark, infant

March 1, 2012

Alexis Jane Clark, infant, Big Run, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012.

She was born Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, daughter of Deanna Surkala and Stephen Clark, who survive, of Big Run.

In addition to her parents, surviving relatives include her maternal grandparents, Joseph Surkala and Tamela Robinson, both of DuBois; her paternal great-grandparents, Catherine and Marty Clark of Punxsutawney; her paternal great-grandmother, Charlotte Young of Anita; her paternal grandfather, Michael Clark of Punxsutawney; and her paternal grandmother, Toni and step-grandfather Robert Lewis of Timblin.

Leonard Emberg, 84

March 1, 2012

Leonard Emberg, 84, Union City, passed away Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at St. Vincent Health Center, Erie, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Oscar and Liza (Chapman) Emberg.

Nov. 4, 1948, at the First United Methodist Church in Union City, he married Darlene Ballog, who survives. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary this past year.

Mr. Emberg attended Punxsutawney schools and then served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman First Class during World War II.

He was retired from Barnes Group, Raymond Manufacturing, Corry.

Patricia Ann Zimmerman, 82

March 1, 2012

Patricia Ann Zimmerman, 82, Oregon, Ohio, passed away Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, in her home under hospice care.

She was born July 23, 1929, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Francis and Florence (Kingsley) Lento.

She was the wife of Earl Zimmerman, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Zimmerman was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oregon; the Eastern Star for many years; and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates).

Surviving relatives include three daughters, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

JH hoops teams end seasons on high notes

PUNXSUTAWNEY — While the Punxsy Chucks varsity basketball team prepares for its District IX championship game Saturday at Clarion University, the junior high basketball teams' seasons have come to a close.

The ninth-grade squad closed on a high note, winning two of its last three games, with the only loss being a close overtime loss to the Bradford Owls in the last game of the season.
