James D. Rowles, 71

September 20, 2012

James D. Rowles, 71, Troutville, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, in Punxsutawney.

He was born on Jan. 9, 1941, in Grampian, a son of the late John and Wilma (Lee) Rowles.

He was active in the East Branch Camp and enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors and his dog, Hunter.

He retired from Greenwich Collieries in Cherry Tree after 25 years of service to the company.

Sally Lou Whitesell, 85

Sally Lou Whitesell, 85, of Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Jan. 31, 1927, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late George Clarence and Maude Marie (Reesman) Hanley.

On April 9, 1944, she married William Lee Whitesell, Sr.; he preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 2000.

Sally knew what being a good mother and grandmother was all about; she enjoyed cookouts, making Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and just spending time with her family.

She also enjoyed wood crafts and getting out to eat or to go shopping.

John Levy, 79

John Levy, 79, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at Christ the King Manor in DuBois.

He was born Aug. 24, 1933, in Reynoldsville, a son of the late Ben and Julia (Redding) Levy.

On Nov. 24, 1955, he married Rita (Johns) Levy, who survives.

He was a veteran of the US Army and served overseas.

He was the co-owner of Jefferson Wholesale Grocery Company, where he worked his entire life.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, billiards, reading the Bible, watching movies and watching the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

5th, 9th for Punxsy golf squads at Invite

DUBOIS — Both the boys' and girls' golf squads from Punxsutawney made the trip Wednesday morning to participate in the annual DuBois Area High School Tournament, which was played on the Silver Course at Treasure Lake, and both teams had fair showings at the tournament with the boys taking fifth overall and the girls placing ninth.

On the boys' side, Hollidaysburg hit the clubhouse with the lowest score, shooting a 334 as a team, and Punxsy was just 20 strokes behind in fifth overall.

Lady Chucks XC sweeps Elk County and St. Marys

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With near perfect weather to run, the Punxsy girls' cross country team took advantage and recorded 10 seasonal or career bests on the day to defeat both Elk County and Saint Marys on their home course yesterday afternoon.  

Elk County fell 25-30 to the Punxsy harriers, despite taking the top two places in the meet with the home team taking the next five places to earn the victory. Against Saint Marys, the Punxsy girls took places two through six on their way to a 20-40 victory. DuBois Central also competed but did not field a full team.

Dinger, Ward ease Chucks XC to double dual wins

PUNXSUTAWNEY – In what was suppose to be a three-man race to the finish, Punxsy’s Bo Dinger took control early and won the boys' cross country double dual meet going away by 36 seconds to help his team sweep past both Elk County Catholic and St. Marys.

Dinger widened his lead for the Chucks as the race went on and turned in what amounted to a dominating performance over ECC’s Ryan Detsch and St. Marys’ Alec Foster. The Punxsy junior ran across the finish line in 17:13, 36 seconds better than Detsch (17:49) and 45 seconds over Foster (17:58).

BODY PULLED FROM CLOE LAKE LATE WEDNESDAY EVENING

Two Punxsutawney firefighters, Paul Pape (left) and Tony Runco (right), are shown taking the Stokes basket to the recovery site to aid in the retrieval of the body of a man who was found dead in Cloe Lake Wednesday. The Punxsutawney Fire Department boat was used in the recovery of the victim near the breast of the dam. Members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department's Water Rescue Team responded to the rescue call at 8:42 p.m. Wednesday at Cloe Lake in Bell Township.

To radar, or not to radar: That is the question Big Run Council is discussing

BIG RUN — Big Run Borough Mayor Joe Buterbaugh encouraged Big Run Borough Council to support the repeal of the state law that prohibits local police to use radar at a recent meeting.

Buterbaugh said if the state law regarding the non-use of radar by local police was repealed, he could possibly have the sheriff's department help with the speeding problem on Main Street in Big Run.

"Pennsylvania is the only state in the union that does not permit municipal police departments to use radar to clock speeders," he said.

Community Action announces results of homeless survey in Jefferson County

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Community Action, Inc. recently received results from a survey conducted on Aug. 15 of unsheltered homeless individuals in the county.

Overall, the results were as follows:

• Eight individuals identified as being unsheltered homeless in accordance with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) definition.

Lady Chucks VB breezes past the Lady Raiders

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Playing back-to-back days in any sport is tough. Punxsy proved to be successful on both ends of the matches as it breezed past rival Brookville, 3-0, Tuesday night.

Behind 15 service aces and strong serving in the sets, the Lady Chucks (5-1) claimed the three games by scores of 25-13, 25-10 and 25-11.

"Any time you win a match in three sets it is a good thing. It is a feat for any team any time," said Punxsy's coach Heather Good. "Sydney Phillips and Chelsea Engeholm served extremely well, while Taylor Newcome had a solid night on our front line."
