School Board closes school closing discussion, welcomes new reps

PUNXSUTAWNEY — There will be no elementary school closings for the next school year, as the Punxsutawney Area School Board has decided end the discussion in regards to the next school year.

"As of tonight's meeting, the idea to close any elementary schools is completely off the table," said Dr. Keith Wolfe, Punxsutawney Area School District superintendent at Wednesday's school board committee meeting.

Bob Pascuzzo, board member, said some day, the district will have to add on an elementary school in town.

MCDONALD’S EMPLOYEES LEND A HELPING HAND FOR PRIDE

Lending a helping hand to the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce and PRIDE was the goal of the day last week, as two employees from McDonald's, owned by Gene Puskash, spent their work day recently installing the scare crows on the parking meters downtown and assisting with the cleanup of the beds surrounding the trees along the sidewalk in downtown Punxsutawney. Eleanor “Ellie” M. Havrilla, 80

Eleanor “Ellie” M. Havrilla, 80, of Punxsu-tawney, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at home.

Eleanor was born Oct. 16, 1931, in Barnesboro, a daughter of the late Francis John and Anna Theresa (Pacharka) Pawhutsky.

On May 14, 1951, at Saint Michael’s Church in Glen Campbell, she married Richard Carl Havrilla. She was a very devoted and loving wife who cared for her husband for many years prior to his death. He preceded her in death on March 5, 2005.

She was a member of Saints Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church.

Glenn O. Snyder, 97

Glenn O. Snyder, 97, of Mayport (North Freedom), died on Tuesday evening, Sept. 25, 2012, at the Clarion Hospital.

He was born on January 26, 1915, in Ringgold Township, Jefferson County, the son of James C. and Otie E. (Wise) Snyder.

He married Geraldine L. (Miller) on Sept. 26, 1936, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 13, 1985.

Andrew M. Wheeler, 92

Andrew M. Wheeler, 92, husband of Anna (Whitfield) Wheeler, formerly of Anita and Reynoldsville, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at Christ the King Manor in DuBois, where he had been a resident for more than four years.

Born in DuBois on Nov. 5, 1919, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mate (Murdoch) Wheeler.

Andy retired after many years as a machinist with the National Rubber Manufacturing Company in Akron, Ohio, making parts used in the construction of tires. After retirement, he moved from his home in Salem, Ohio, to the Whitfield Farm near Anita.

Philena S. (Chappell) Stebbins, 100

Mrs. Philena S. (Chappell) Stebbins, 100, of Indiana, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012.

She was born Feb. 28, 1912, in Belvedere, N.C., the daughter of Carrie and Emma Frances Chappell.

Attending Nyack College, Nyack, N.Y. in 1929, Philena met her late husband, Rev. John E. Stebbins Sr., and together they ministered for some 50 years in the Christian and Missionary Alliance Churches, with 42 of those years at Mahaffey and Burnside, Pa.

Lady Chucks girls' tennis dominates Lady Owls

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If a tennis team allows the opponent eight total games in eight matches, the chances are good for a win. The Lady Chucks gave up those eight games on their way to cruising past the Lady Owls of Bradford, 8-1, Tuesday afternoon.

"The PAHS girls played well tonight," noted Punxsy coach Rose Graffius.

And played well they did from top to bottom. At the top singles, the Lady Chucks' Amber Ward took care of the Lady Owls' Nicole Henderson, 6-2 and 6-0.

Chucks' XC depth enough to sweep Owls and Beavers

DuBOIS — In a partial preview of the District IX AA race, Punxsy again showed its boys' cross country running depth to get past Bradford and complete the Tuesday sweep over DuBois.

Punxsy (6-0) pushed across three of the first five finishers against Bradford and saw its fifth and final scoring runner end up two spots ahead of the final Owl for a 26-30 win.

Against DuBois, Punxsy recorded three of the top four spots and five of the first eight runners in a team score final that had a bit more breathing room in a 22-35 win and sweep of the day.

Punxsy posts second-straight boys' soccer shutout Tuesday

CURWENSVILLE — The Chucks no sooner stepped off the bus before they started to pelt the Tide net with goals. Punxsy netted four goals in the opening 12 minutes to post its second-straight boys' soccer shut out with a 5-0 victory at Curwensville Tuesday afternoon.

Senior forward Trevor Peace produced a 'hat trick' with the final three Punxsy (7-3) scores. Ty Zimmerman produced a goal and an assist.

Tanner Evans accounted for the other goal.

Kevin Hughes assisted on the game's first two goals, and Tyler Baer passed the ball for the fourth tally.
