No injuries in couch fire

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It happened again, as a neighbor thought she heard a beeping noise coming from a house at 302 Greenwood Ave. in Punxsutawney, saw smoke inside the structure and called 911.

With a quick response from the Punxsutawney Fire Department, the home was spared major damage.

"The owner, Scott Taylor, left at 3 p.m. and was working on an aquarium in what was the living room, and either a cigarette or equipment from the aquarium fell onto the couch and began to smolder," said Bryan Smith, Punxsutawney Fire Department chief.

Commissioners declare Sept. as Senior Center Month

BROOKVILLE — County commissioners Paul Corbin and Jeff Pisarcik signed a proclamation declaring September 2012 to be Senior Community Center Month at a meeting of the County Commission last Tuesday.

The proclamation read, “We, Commissioners of the County of Jefferson, do hereby proclaim September 2012 as National Senior Community Center Month.

Population increasing at Jefferson County Jail

BROOKVILLE — The population in the Jefferson County prison system has been increasing recently, Warden Tom Elbel said at the latest meeting of the Jefferson County jail board last Monday.

“I don’t have an explanation,” he said in regard to the cause of the sudden uptick.

He said that the jail has received a few inmates from other counties, but not as many as it has received in the past and still with a larger increase than has previously been recorded.

Mary Ruth Reitz, 81

Mary Ruth Reitz, 81, of Laurelbrooke Landing, passed away at Brookville Hospital on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012.

She was born May 31, 1931, at Cloverdale Farm in Stanton, Pa., the youngest child of the late Harry Webster and Jessie Ruth (Brosius) Reitz. 

She never married.

After graduating from Brookville High School and Grove City College with an associate degree, Mary Ruth worked as a secretary/bookkeeper at Brookville Equipment; as a secretary to Milton Eisenhower, president of Penn State; and as a secretary for James Hysong, superintendent of Brookville Area Joint Schools.

Raymond “Junior” Shank, Jr., 76

Raymond “Junior” Shank, Jr., 76, of Punxsutawney, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at home.

He was born Aug. 29, 1936, in Indiana County, a son of the late Charles and Edna Mae (Wright) Shank.

Mary Katharyn “Kate” Patterson has been his life partner for the past 42 years.

Mr. Shank worked as a heavy equipment mechanic and as a coal miner.

He was a member of the American Legion in Rossiter and Punxsutawney, the Punxsutawney Eagles and St. Joe’s Club in DeLancey.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved his dog, Brownie.
