Hitting the road

The long road trip and the threat of inclement weather couldn’t stop Punxsy’s sea of red from making the trip to Rimersburg to watch the varsity football squad take on Union Friday night.

Despite Mother Nature’s intervention causing an hour-long lightning delay, the show went on. But it was far from a happy ending for Punxsy, as Union earned a 21-6 victory over the Chucks, dropping Punxsy’s record to 1-1 on the young season.

Borough compost contamination becoming an issue

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough is requesting that residents talk with the borough before adding to its compost pile on Beyer Avenue.

"If anyone is going to be dumping compost or tree limbs on the pile, please call the Public Works Department or the borough office to schedule a time that it can be taken up to the pile," said Ben White, Punxsutawney Borough manager at Tuesday's Public Safety Committee meeting.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Kindness and compassion are a pair of traits that every parent hopes his or her child picks up and runs with, and one local youngster has certainly displayed both qualities with a recent act.

Daniel Billick, the son of John Billick and Amy Cowburn, both of Punxsutawney, saved up his hard-earned allowance for a very good cause: to purchase a backpack full of school supplies for an elementary student who may not be as fortunate as he is.

Chucks look to stay focused in Week 2

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After reclaiming the Route 36 trophy a week ago, the Punxsy Chucks will look to build off the winning momentum in its first road contest of the 2012 gridiron season tonight against the Union Knights.

The Chucks will have their work cut out for them as they will face a veteran Knights squad, who is trying to recapture its past football success as a long time member of the Keystone Shortway Conference.

Chucks soccer blitzes tide in second half

September 7, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With the contest tied at halftime, the Punxsy boys' soccer team blitzed Curwensville with three goals in the opening seven minutes of the second half to roll to a 7-2 victory in its home opener.

The Chucks (3-1) received a pair of goals from both senior Ty Zimmerman and junior Brycen Lunger to pace the offense.

Trevor Peace, Kevin Hughes and Tanner Evans chipped in a goal apiece of the seven-goal afternoon.
