Chucks' soccer explodes past Elk County Crusaders

ST. MARYS — A pattern of scoring in clusters is forming. The Punxsy Chucks boys’ soccer continued their pattern of scoring in bunches on Saturday with five second half scores to explode past the Elk County Crusaders, 6-1.

“I am pleased with how the guy played,” said Punxsy coach Phil Shenkle. “ECC always plays us tough.”

The Chucks, now 8-3, saw the pairing of Ty Zimmerman and Tanner Evans team up for the team’s first four goals and three assists between them. Evans netted two goals and two assists, while Zimmerman scored two as well with one assist.

Brookville tops Moniteau in fourth-quarter comeback

WEST SUNBURY ­— The Brookville Raiders' football team was able to outlast the Moniteau Warriors 19-14 Friday thanks to another strong performance from junior running backs Zach Vroman and Brodie Zacherl.

Vroman tallied 153 yards by night's end, and Zacherl rushed for 107, with an 11-yard TD run.

Punxsy's Got Talent winners

The Punxsutawney Spirit held Appreciation Day on Saturday at the SS.C.D. auditorium to give a big thank-you to the community. The fun-filled day included the 3rd Annual Punxsy’s Got Talent show.

Winners of the talent show were (from left) Brielle King, third place, who sang and played the keyboard; Garrett Rowan (second place), who played the guitar; and Caleb Dinger (first place), who also sang and played the keyboard. Dinger received a $100 cash prize.

Pumpkin-decorating contest winners

The pumpkin-decorating contest at The Spirit's Appreciation Day on Saturday drew a crowd of artistic children, including Giselle Hickox (from left), 8, Punxsutawney, “Most Beautiful Pumpkin; Madison Barr, 9, Punxsutawney, “Ugliest Pumpkin”; Rooney Kunselman, 3, Rossiter, “Most Original Idea”; Matthew Grusky, 7, Punxsutawney, “Funniest Pumpkin”; and Dartanyan Pifer, 4, Punxsutawney, “Spirit Favorite.”

Dartanyan won a $25 Chamber gift certificate.

County Market sponsored the event, and Pine Valley donated the pumpkins.

Community First Bank donated treat bags to participants.

ELDERS' AND DEACONS' CONVENTION

An Elders' and Deacons' Convention was held at Pleasant Grove on Thursday, September 2. The convention was called to order by Rev. Hartman, of Punxsutawney, and Rev. H. G. Teagarden, of Oliveburg, was elected chariman, and T. M. Sadler, secretary.

Richard A. Garzoni, 87

Richard A. Garzoni, 87, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born Nov. 30, 1924, in Eleanora, Pa., a son of the late Victor and Elva (Soliday) Garzoni.

On Nov. 22, 1946, he married Theresa V. Maruca, who survives.

He was owner and operator of Garzoni and Son Coal Company and Garzoni Excavating for many years and retired from Brocsious Trucking.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anita, Pa.

Edward L. Vitko, 92

September 30, 2012

Edward L. Vitko, 92, of Indiana, formerly of Adrian, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at home at Clairvaux Commons in Indiana.

He was born Dec. 29, 1919, in Big Soldier, a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Kowack) Vitko. He was the last member of his immediate family.

Mr. Vitko was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II, where he earned the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

On May 4, 1946, he married Clara Elizabeth Jarbeck. She preceded him in death on May 27, 2006.
