Chucks football seeks to navigate through Dutch traffic

ST. MARYS — Coming off what was the most complete effort of the fall, the Punxsy Chucks will seek to navigate through the traffic an ever-imposing St. Marys Flying Dutch present tonight in St. Marys.

One of the traditional and more storied rivalries on the schedule, the Chucks and Dutch will renew with both squads coming off dominate performances a week ago.

On the road, St. Marys dismantled Clarion-Limestone 35-0 behind its ground attack and stiff defensive line.

Lady Chucks run past Ramettes volleyball

PUNXSUTAWNEY – It was a night of some needed runs. Punxsy used two late scoring bursts wrapped around a game with two others in its three-game sweep over Johnsonburg Thursday night.

The Lady Chucks finished the first game off with the final six points to win 25-22. The home team used one seven-point run to open a lead and another to double up the Ramettes in a 25-16 second set before running off five-straight late points for a 25-20 third contest.

9th-grade FB downs St. Marys, 7th/8th FB over Moniteau

ST. MARYS – The Punxsy ninth-grade football team defeated St. Marys 35-22 on the road September 19.

Kaleb Young rushed through the Flying Dutch defense for three touchdowns to lead the Chucks. Young's three scoring runs covered 54, 39 and 19 yards.

Alex Young recorded his own long touchdown burst of 52 yards. Braxton Giavedoni ran 29 yards to paydirt and added the two-point conversion for the other score.

Quarterback Ryan Jones completed six of eight pass attempts for 80 yards.

"The offensive line played very well," commented Punxsy coach Rob Weaver.

EMS transport vehicle involved in accident at 36/536 intersection

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — Two were injured in an accident involving a Jefferson County EMS transport van Thursday afternoon in Young Township, Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police reported.

Police said the crash occurred at the intersection of Routes 536 and 36, also known as N. Main Street, Punxsutawney.

The report said at 4:07 p.m., a 2009 Dodge Caravan operated by Andrea J. Verdill, 33, of Punxsutawney, was traveling eastbound on 536 and came to a stop at the stop sign at the road’s intersection with Route 36.

School Board to evaluate its fee schedule for upcoming weekend events

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Due to the increased usage of Punxsutawney Area School District facilities on Sunday, the school board discussed some alternatives to the fee schedule at Wednesday's school board committee meeting.

"We would like to add a phrase to our facilities use form to let people know if they are using it on Sunday, they will pay the hourly rate and custodial fees at whatever the rate would be," said Susan H. Robertson, Punxsutawney Area School District business manager.

Commissioners recognize domestic abuse issues at latest meeting

BROOKVILLE — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Jefferson County, the county commissioners declared at their meeting on Tuesday.

Suella Himes, counselor advocate III with the Community Action Crossroads Project, appeared before the commission to speak about the issue of domestic abuse in Jefferson County.

“Domestic violence is really all about power and control,” she said. “You have an individual who loves someone, but they just don’t understand why this individual that they love is hurting them.”

Terri Ann Anthony, 43

Terri Ann Anthony, 43, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at Newnan Piedmont Hospital in Newnan, Georgia, after suffering a brief illness.

She was born May 11, 1969, a daughter of Leroy and Betty Anthony, and the late M. Charlene Furl Anthony.

She graduated from Punxsutawney Area High School in 1987.

Terri worked for many years as a lay midwife and delivered approximately 2,700 babies throughout Pennsylvania, Georgia and Alabama.
