Sloniger top-ranked Class of 2015 catcher

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Prep Baseball Report recently released the Class of 2015's state player rankings, and local product Ryan Sloniger, who caught for the Chucks in 2012, was the top-ranked catcher and the No. 16 overall player in the standings.

In addition to his service with the Chucks, Sloniger plays for the Evoshield Canes — a program that works with recruits, especially from North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland and Virginia — in the summer.

Sports-themed VBS coming to town Friday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Barclay Square has hosted a variety of events throughout the summer: Groundhog Festival, Music in the Park and Church in the Park, among others. Now, get ready for the Punxsutawney Sports Fest.

“We’ve done a variety of different VBS programs over the years; this time, we were looking for something to take into town so everyone can participate,” said Pastor Chris Golembiowski of the First Assembly of God Church near Walston.

Not much longer: Signals almost back to normal

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The new traffic light system that began operation this past spring appears to be working all right as the complaints from the public have died off.

"I haven't received any more complaints from the public regarding the new traffic light system in downtown," said Ben White, Punxsutawney Borough manager at Tuesday's Public Safety Committee meeting.

Punxsutawney Police Department Chief Tom Fedigan said he has not received any complaints about the new system after borough officials met with PennDOT officials regarding the system a few weeks ago.

Hot Dog! Don’t mind if I do!

So far, "Hot Dog Days" at Fezell's County Market has been a big success with many people dining at the outdoor fundraiser located in the Groundhog Plaza. The fundraiser to benefit the Punxsutawney Memorial Library will continue from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today through Friday. Mary "Martha" (Smorey) Clark, 91

Mary "Martha" (Smorey) Clark, 91, Wexford, passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at Vincentian Home surrounded by family.

She was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Braddock, a daughter of the late Andrew and Anna Smorey.

She married Roy M. Clark Jr., who preceded her in death Dec. 13, 1960.

Martha was a loving homemaker her entire life and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Donald J. Wolfe, 57

August 7, 2012

Donald J. Wolfe, 57, Brookville, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at Brookville Hospital.

He was born Nov. 18, 1954, in Butler, a son of the late James Donald Wolfe and Wilma Jane Sollinger Wolfe, who survives, of Knox.

Aug. 4, 2007, in Brookville, he married Pokey Wolfe, who survives.

Mr. Wolfe worked as a laborer for the Glen-Gery Hanley Brick Plant in Summerville for 28 years,and he also worked for the Forest Way Inn for 10 years.

He was an avid artist and enjoyed art, camping, hunting and his dogs.

He especially enjoyed his grandchildren.
