PUNXSUTAWNEY — Entering as the king seed and having dominated its competition in the first two games of the Section I tournament, Punxsy knew it had the edge entering Friday's championship game against Corry.

But Punxsy had its hands full, needing every run it scored to eke out a 7-6 victory over the visiting team and earn the Section 1 title and a berth to states next week.

JLBB knocked out by late Fox rally

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy's 13- and 14-year-old Junior League baseball team was eliminated from contention in the All-Star tournament with Fox Township rallying with a four-run seventh inning to pick up an 11-10 victory in losers' bracket action.

After the game, coach Jim Sloniger discussed how proud he and his fellow coaches were of the team.

9 to 10 a.m. – Registration for third-annual Children’s Pedal Tractor Pull in park, sponsored by London Farm Supplies.

10 to 11 a.m. — Children’s Pedal Tractor Pull. The tractors are supplied by the sponsor. Prizes for winners in age groups four and five; six and seven; eight and nine.

11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., 1:45 to 2:30 p.m. – Michelle’s Magical Poodles.
12:45 to 1:15 p.m. – Dennie Huber, magic.

2:30 to 4:30 p.m. – Dennie Huber, balloons.

4 to 5:30 p.m. – Mike Short Jr. & Statewide Band (country, sponsored by PNC Bank).

FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC

Former members of the Punxsutawney Area High School band are gathering from points far and near this weekend to present the first of what is hoped to become an annual concert by PAHS alumni.

This special event is being held in honor of James A. Colonna (retired), the long-time director of the high school band. The public is invited to enjoy the free concert consisting of familiar selections ranging from marches to pop tunes to show music and more. The program will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium of the Senior High School on North Findley Street.

North Country Homestead celebrates 10th anniversary

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The morning that the world was reveling in a noteworthy Groundhog Day — Feb. 2, 2002, or 02.02.02 — Jodi North and her husband, Scott, were pulling up carpet, and, as she said, “We were not sure what we would find underneath.”

What they found were hardwood floors and the foundation of what today is the North Country Homestead, which celebrated its 10th anniversary Friday.

Joseph Anthony Bianco, 75

Joseph Anthony Bianco, 75, Heilwood, died Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1937, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Joseph and Anna (Gigliotti) Bianco.

July 4, 1964, he married his beloved wife, Rosemary (Conway) Bianco, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Bianco obtained a bachelor’s degree from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1963; a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1973; and a doctorate degree from Nova University in 1986.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1956 until 1962.
