David Gillespie

David Gillespie, of Punxsutawney, died Sunday, July 1, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital after an extended illness.

He was born in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Alexander P. and Vanda Von (Hoppe) Gillespie.

He relocated to Punxsutawney at a young age with his mother and sister, where he completed his secondary education.

After the death of his mother, Mr. Gillespie and his sister were raised by an aunt and uncle, the late Emma and Harry Gutelius.

Mr. Gillespie was a veteran of both the U.S. Air Force and the Army.

Marie Anna Petrick, 88

July 2, 2012

Marie Anna Petrick, 88, of New Alexandria, formerly of Indiana, went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 2, 2012.

She was born May 1, 1924, in Anita, a daughter of Michael and Mary (Gibart) Petrick.

Prior to her retirement, Miss Petrick had worked in retail sales.

She was a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church.

Surviving are two distant cousins, Francis E. and Joseph F. Renosky.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a cousin, Margaret (Barna) Renosky.

DUBOIS — This year's 11- and 12-year-old baseball All-Star team returns 11 players from the squad that lost its first game and battled back to win the 10- and 11-year-old District X title last year, and Monday night in DuBois, the Punxsy team showed it learned its lesson last year — that it was difficult to battle back out of the losers' bracket.

Grays best Miners in battle atop Fed League standings

BROOKVILLE — With the regular season winding down, the Rossiter Miners, Brookville Grays and DuBois Rockets are in a tough battle for the top three playoff slots. With the Miners' 5-2 loss to the Grays Monday night, they now have a 12-6 record that will most likely place them as the third seed.

The Grays improved to 14-5, putting them one loss behind the Rockets (14-4).

The Miners were able to grab a run early in the contest but were unable to build any type of scoring momentum.

• 10 a.m. — Teddy Bear Picnic, sponsored by Punxsutawney Career Women’s Club. In case of rain, event will be held on the second floor of the Eagles across from Barclay Square.
• 10 a.m. to noon — Children’s Workshops, Boom Town-era children’s activities (ages six to 12) at the Lattimer House, sponsored by the Punxsutawney Historical & Genealogical Society.
