Jefferson County Fair kicks off today

PINE CREEK TOWNSHIP — The Jefferson County Fair will kick off for yet another year of food, events, exhibits and fun this weekend at the fairgrounds.

While the animals and exhibits will arrive today, the festivities will get underway Sunday.

“I’m excited about all kinds of stuff,” said Jim Grant, the fair secretary.

Despite today’s view, brick was tops years ago

PUNXSUTAWNEY — As discussions as to the future of Punxsy’s two brick streets — Dinsmore Avenue and Grace Way — continue, 120 years ago, a brick street was considered quite an upgrade over the dirt-and-plank roads that existed at that time.

“In the 1890s, laying brick was considered to be a permanent street improvement,” said S. Thomas Curry, former director and current member of the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Spirit editorial staff is happy to announce that the Spring Sports Outstanding Players have received their honorary plaques, and they can now be announced to the public.

Recent graduate Brody Morgan — a track and field star at Punxsy throughout his time at Punxsutawney Area High School — and soon-to-be senior Chelsea Engeholm — a member of the District IX champion Lady Chucks softball team — were this year's winners, as selected by The Spirit's readers.

Ruby I. Ryen, 91

Ruby I. Ryen, 91, formerly of Rossiter (Canoe Township), died awaiting the second coming of Jesus Thursday, July 12, 2012, at Springfield Regional Medical Center, Springfield, Ohio.

She was born May 25, 1921, in Canoe Township, a daughter of the late Winfield and Twila Stiver. 

While she lived most of her life on the same property where she was born, she spent the last four years of her life in Springfield, Ohio, living near her family. After moving to Springfield, she always missed the hills and countryside of Pennsylvania.

A special Legislature Farewell Breakfast was held in honor of PA State Representative Sam Smith early Friday morning....
