Firefighters, J&J welcome Arc campers to carnival

June 28, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — There were some happy campers at the Punxsutawney’s Fire Department’s Old Home Week carnival grounds Wednesday morning, as a group from Camp Friendship ate food and rode rides at the annual free event.

Every summer during Old Home Week, the fire department and J&J Amusements open the midway up and allow the campers — who range from age six up to 44 years of age — to ride the rides and eat for free, said April Barrick, co-director of Camp Friendship’s Punxsy Camp.

LLBB Stars, quickly back into form, come out firing against Brockway

June 26, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With a team returning 11 of the 13 members from last year's 10- and 11-year-old District X Little League baseball All-Star Champions, Punxsy wasted no time getting back into the swing of things Tuesday in the opening round of this year's 11- and 12-year-old tournament with a 12-2, four-inning victory over Brockway on home turf.

After the game, Punxsy head coach Brad Gigliotti struggled to come up with anything his team needed to improve on in the one day of practice it has before taking to the road Thursday against St. Marys in the second round of the winners' bracket.

DuBois comes from behind late to down Punxsy LLSB All-Stars

June 25, 2012

DUBOIS — With a three-day rest and the tournament's king seed on the line, Punxsy and DuBois' 11- and 12-year-old softball All-Stars faced off in the winners' bracket championship game Monday evening in DuBois.

And behind a two-run sixth inning, DuBois earned a come-from-behind win to advance to the District X final Friday.

After the game, Punxsy head coach Mike Ishman attributed the loss to a couple simple concepts: DuBois got the hits when it needed them, and Punxsy made a few too many mistakes and didn't get the hits when it needed them most.
