PUNXSUTAWNEY â With their respective wins over St. Marys last Wednesday in Brockway, the Chucks baseball team and the Lady Chucks softball team each advanced to today's opening round of the PIAA Class AAA State Championships.
On the boys' end, the Chucks, who earned an impressive ninth-consecutive District IX crown last Wednesday, will open the PIAAs with a 4 p.m. contest against a WPIAL team â the Belle Vernon Leopards â who finished as District VII's second seed after a 1-0 loss in a pitching duel against Blackhawk in the D-VII championship game last Thursday.
NORTH MAHONING TOWNSHIP â A 32-year-old Smicksburg man has been charged with criminal homicide for allegedly fatally shooting his estranged father-in-law, according to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police and the Indiana County Coronerâs office.
Shaun C. Fairman was also charged with aggravated assault and a firearms violation in the death of Richard E. Shotts, 55, Rural Valley, police reported.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â As Alice Cooper said many years ago "Schoolâs out for the summer." When translated, that lyric also means: The pool is open and ready for sunbathers and swimmers alike.
The George C. Brown Community Pool unofficially kicked off summer Saturday, as it opened its doors for the first day of swimming, said Jeff Overly, co-manager of the pool with Adrienne Goss.
Overly said that pool regulars will find that there is a new entrance to the pool this year located by the concession stand.
YOUNG TOWNSHIP â There were no serious injuries reported in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 1:10 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Snyder Hill Road and Route 119 by Wal-Mart, Young Township.
Janina H. Brewer, 92, Reynoldsville, died Sunday, June 3, 2012, at home.
She was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Elenora, a daughter of the late Fred and Mary (Killian) Wisneski.
Feb. 29, 1938, she married Raymond L. Brewer, who preceded her in death April 23, 1973.
Mrs. Brewer was a 1938 graduate of Reynoldsville High School.
She retired from Loree Footware in Big Run after 16 years of service.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Reynoldsville.
Kenneth L. Dobson, 88, Valier, died Sunday, June 3, 2012, in Johnstown.
He was born Sept. 14, 1923, in Oliveburg, a son of the late Roy and Anna (Himes) Dobson.
March 15, 1947, he married Anita Jane Mahan, who preceded him in death Dec. 3, 1980.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Falls Creek and the American Legion of DuBois.
He was a painter, a farmer, and a truck driver, and he enjoyed being outdoors.
Daniel Mark Royer, 49, Sunbury, died Saturday, June 2, 2012, at home.
He was born Nov. 27, 1962, in Brookville, a son of Raymond Royer and Sue (Haslett) Lambermont.
In addition to his parents, surviving relatives include a son, Dustin Royer of Meadville; and two sisters, Wendie Reddinger of Ebensburg and Kelly Day of Punxsutawney.
At the family's request, there will be no visitation, and services will be private.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Richard L. Fait Funeral Home.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â The Punxsutawney Fire Departmentâs Old Home Week celebration will offer a different form of entertainment for the first time, as a live band will perform one night at the carnival located behind the west side of the Punxy Plaza.
Ridinâ Shotgun will perform from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 29, at the carnival grounds.
âWeâve been exploring alternatives to draw more people into the carnival, and by having a band, it should bring out some of the people who donât ride rides,â said Tami McFarland, chairperson for the Punxsutawney Fire Departmentâs Old Home Week committee.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â April 13, Kim Leemhuis put on her uniform as a Pennsylvania State Police trooper for the last time, as after 25 years of service, Leemhuis formally retired.
She was only the sixth-ever woman to be promoted to as a major in Pennsylvania State Police history.
Despite all the changes the state police has undergone since Leemhuis began, there are still not many female officers â only about four percent.
âThis is not a traditional role for women,â she said.
A large storm dumped a sizeable amount of rain onto area roads in Jefferson County Friday afternoon. The heavy rain washed out numerous roads, including this portion of Jackson Run Road in Gaskill Township. Here, PennDOT inspects the washed out area as water continued to cascade under the road. Officials did open some roads after a period of time when the storms had receded. There were also reports of funnel clouds in the Punxsutawney area as the National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning.
