Miners put up 16 runs in big win over NAPA

ROSSITER — With the standings tight at the top of the Federation League and three teams vying for the two coveted first-round byes, the Rossiter Miners did their part Thursday night to come one step closer to the time off with a 16-4, five-inning victory over NAPA Auto Parts of DuBois — pulling them within 0.5 games of first place.

LLBB keeps things rolling with win over St. Marys

ST. MARYS — In the second round of the 11- and 12-year-old baseball All-Stars tournament, Punxsy picked up a convincing 11-6 victory over St. Marys to earn a berth in the winners' bracket championship and the right to play for the tournament's king seed Monday in DuBois.

After the game, Punxsy head coach Brad Gigliotti had lots of positives to point out about his team's performance.

Anyone who even vaguely knows me could tell you with 100-percent certainty that fashion sense is not exactly my forté — and that is probably even putting it nicely.

Sandals with socks made my family cringe when I was a teenager, yet I donned them regardless of their opinions.

Even earlier — in my pre-teen years — I owned a pair of shoes that were a color I had never seen before. They were a mix between red and purple — a color I belovingly called "cherry cola."

Free concert tonight with Ridin’ Shotgun

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For the first time, the Punxsutawney Fire Department’s Old Home Week Committee will welcome a free concert by country-rock band Ridin’ Shotgun, which will perform at 7 p.m. tonight at the carnival grounds behind the west side of the Punxy Plaza.

The band has been together for five years and performed at various functions throughout the Punxsy area.

According to guitarist Ray “Poke” Long, last year, the group opened for The Clarks at the Dayton Fair, and has performed on the local club scene, at the Reynoldsville Street Fair and the Farmers’ Market in Punxsy.

Paul Leon (Poke) Heitzenrater, 72

June 28, 2012

Paul Leon (Poke) Heitzenrater, 72, of Annapolis, Md., and Punxsutawney, died Monday, June 25, 2012, at home.

He was born April 20, 1940, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Vaughn H. and Ethel J. (Bodenhorn) Heitzenrater

Dec. 20, 1965, he married Ruth Ann (Whitesell) Heitzenrater, who survives.

Mr. Heitzenrater graduated in 1958 from the Punxsutawney Area High School.

During high school, he worked for Fleck’s Beverages.

After graduation, he worked at Freas Brothers Garage before joining the U.S. Navy in 1959.
