PUNXSUTAWNEY â Punxsy's John J. Fisher Post 62 Senior Legion team had an all-around solid performance with pitcher Cory Geer throwing a three-hit shuout and the offense scoring 10 runs over four-plus innings on nine hits to pick up a 10-0, five-inning win over Creps United Publications Tuesday in Punxsutawney.
"We swung the bats pretty well; we ran the bases pretty well; and we got a pretty good pitching performance from Cory," Punxsy head coach Mike Dickey said after the game. "It's pretty simple. When you do those things, you'll usually come out on top."
INDIANA â Already ahead 10-6 entering the visitor's half of the seventh inning, Fezell Enterprises put up a 10-spot and went on to earn a 20-6 victory over United in Indiana County Youth League action Monday evening.
Fezell started the game with a six-spot right out of the shoot, and it added three more in the second to open up a 9-1 lead before things settled down until the seventh inning.
Joey DiPietro led the offensive explosion with a 5-for-5 night, which included a double, two runs scored and two driven in.
The 2012 Western Pennsylvania Laurel Festival Queenâs Pageant was held Tuesday night at Brookville Jr.-Sr. High School. Eight contestants from western Pennsylvania competed for the title, which is awarded annually to a young woman between the ages of 16 and 20. This year, Kathryn Steele (center), a graduate of Brookville Jr.-Sr. High School, was crowned the 2012 Western Pennsylvania Laurel Festival Queen. BIG RUN â Monday, Big Run Mayor Joe Buterbaugh presented evidence that Big Run Borough Council had agreed in principle many years ago to take care of the road at McClure Cemetery.
Buterbaugh produced a copy of The Punxsutawney Spirit, dated Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1982, which contained a story written by Tom Chandler, in which Bob Buffington of the McClure Cemetery Association agreed to meet councilâs requirement to prepare the road for oiling and chipping next spring.
