PUNXSUTAWNEY â Last Saturday, the Fezell Enterprises Indiana Youth County League team dropped a close game to Walbeck, 7-5.
Walbeck led 4-0, but Fezell battled back to cut the lead to one run before a three-run inning put Walbeck comfortably ahead â a lead it would hold throughout the remainder of the game.
Joey DiPietro and Keeston Perry led the Punxsy offense with two hits apiece.
DiPietro added an RBI, and one of Perry's hits was a double.
Lucas Ambler also went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, and Kevin Hutton added an RBI walk for the visiting team.
Bob Greslick, of Mahaffey, recently bagged this 400-plus pound black bear while bow hunting in Canada. The bear was killed in the early part of May.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Punxsutawney Borough Council has been given a choice to either pay for a study to re-certify the Mahoning Creek flood levee, or have much of the borough classified as a flood plain by the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA).
âIf we donât get the levee certified to the current federal standards, FEMA will decertify the dike as if it doesnât exist,â said Borough Manager Ben White.
BROOKVILLE â Although the state budget is due to be completed June 30, Jefferson County Commissioners were hesitant to offer comments during Tuesdayâs county commission meeting.
Commissioner Jim McIntyre said itâs âtoo prematureâ to make a comment; however, they are urging support of the $27.65 million proposed Senate Bill 1466.
The spending plan restores around $500 million in cuts to education, social services and other areas.
Chairman Paul Corbin said the commissioners have been encouraged to e-mail, phone or send a letter to Gov. Tom Corbett, urging support of the new bill.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Tuesday, the Punxsutawney chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution named Katie Laska as the recipient of its Community Service Award.
Mae Jean Beck, 87, Brockway, died Monday, June 11, 2012, at Highland View Health Care, Brockway.
She was born May 20, 1925, in Westville, a daughter of the late Donald D. and Florence (Hetrick) Dobson.
Sept. 2, 1950, she married Archie B. Beck, who preceded her in death March 19, 2007.
Mrs. Beck was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hormtown.
Surviving relatives include a sister, Mary P. Karkosy of Freemont, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, William O. Dobson.
Beverly D. âBeaâ Hinderliter, 69, Coolspring, died Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
She was born Jan. 3, 1943, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Dee Glenn and Elizabeth Amy (McCana) Sutter.
Nov. 9, 1963, she married Charles Franklin Hinderliter, who survives.
Mrs. Hinderliter was a 1960 graduate of the Punxsutawney Area High School and worked for several years at Pramco and Punxsy Sportswear, as well as with her husband at Hinderliterâs Garage for more than 20 years.
