JVs falter a bit over weekend, look to finish strong

May 14, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After jumping out to an impressive 13-1 start, the Punxsy Chucks JV baseball team faltered over a two-day period with two losses to two very tough opponents.

The first loss came Friday at the hands of State College —a 14-2 defeat.

The Chucks struggled with the sticks Friday, earning only two hits off the bats of Christian Falgout and Dakotah Byers.

Byers' hit came in the sixth and drove in Punxsy's only two runs of the day.

Seniors come up big with a win over Smethport on Senior Day

May 13, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Before Saturday afternoon's softball game against Smethport, the Lady Chucks took time to pay tribute to the members of their team who will be graduating in less than a month.

In the game that followed, Punxsy's seniors shined — highlighted by a three-RBI triple by senior catcher Johnna Depp — in an 8-4 victory over the Hubbers.

After the game, Punxsy head coach Alan Pifer said he was pleased with the team's performance to close out a busy week heading into another this week.

Baker, Sloniger combine to blank Hubbers, 6-0

May 13, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy starting pitcher Dane Baker pitched six innings of two-hit baseball, and Ryan Sloniger closed the deal with one perfect inning, as the Chucks cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Smethport Hubbers Saturday in Punxsutawney.

A Dylan Mott double and a Ryan Stratton single were the only blemishes on an otherwise perfect, walk-free effort by the Chucks' pitchers.

With warm weather here, residents reminded of code violations

May 13, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It's that time of year to dust off the lawnmowers and cut the grass — and property owners who don't will be hearing from Punxsutawney code enforcement officer Mary McHenry.

"The lawn mowing season began a little bit earlier than last year with the warm weather back in March, which has caused grass mowing violations to start early,” McHenry said.

Many people have mowed their grass a couple of times already, which causes those who haven't to stick out.

Chucks tentative at plate in loss to S.C.

May 11, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite a pair of hits in the first three batters of the game, the Punxsy baseball team's offense took a tentative approach at the plate and managed only two more hits for the remainder of the game against State College starter Michael Finlan, as the Little Lions went on to a 5-0 victory Friday in Punxsutawney.

"We just weren't attacking enough," Punxsy head coach Mike Dickey said. "We weren't aggressive, and we couldn't put runs on the board. And it showed. We're not stepping up to the plate with confidence, and we need to start doing that."

Lady Chucks rebound with a pair of fours

May 11, 2012

STATE COLLEGE — After falling to a polished Bald Eagle squad Thursday afternoon in Punxsutawney, the Punxsy softball team knew it had to put that game in its past with another tough foe ahead in State College Friday. And the Lady Chucks did just that, and behind two four-run innings and solid pitching from starter Randa Depp, Punxsy cruised to an 8-1 victory.

Despite the fact the Lady Chucks lost Thursday, Punxsy head coach Alan Pifer had said he'd seen a lot of things he liked out of his team — including hitting the ball hard and pitching well. And Friday, it paid off.
