CLARION â Dr. Brenda Dede, vice-president of Academic Affairs at Clarion University, said Wednesday eveningâs speaker could be described by many adjectives.
Sheâs an author, a poet, a dancer and a Civil Rights activist â and Wednesday, Dr. Maya Angelou graced the stage of the Marwick-Boyd Theater on Clarion Universityâs campus, to an auditorium of 3,000 people.
âIâm here, and Iâve come to say something,â Angelou said. âAnd I wonât leave until I say it.â
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Instead of rain, student artists at IUP-Punxsutawney had to deal with the heat Thursday afternoon.
On the eve of finals, the students took chalk to the walk to draw different scenes portraying aspects of health, diversity, political and societal issues.
Seventeen students or student groups took part in the event, which was judged by members of the IUP-Punxsy staff and members of the community.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Despite not yet recording a base hit and trailing 3-2 after two innings Thursday afternoon in Punxsutawney, the Punxsy JV baseball team scored 13 runs on 12 hits over the course of the final three innings to win a 15-3, five-inning contest over Marion Center via the 10-run rule.
"Our bats started out a little bit sluggish, and it seemed like we needed a wake up call," Punxsy head coach Rodney Thompson said after the game. "When you have some pitching that's a little bit slower, you have to stay back on it. But hitting is still hitting."
PUNXSUTAWNEY â It would be a "virtually impossible" feat today, according to his daughter, Mary Ann Barilar.
But from 1917-1921, Joseph (Joe) V. Harrick (1895-1958), earned 16 letters during his college career at West Virginia University, and is the one and only recognized 16-time letterwinner in WVU history.
A Punxsutawney native and former Punxsy coach, Harrick's greatest feat was earning four varsity letters each in football, baseball, wrestling and track and field.
Bernard R. âBudâ Dobson, 87, Coolspring, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Mahoning Riverside Manor, Punxsutawney.
He was born Sept. 17, 1924, in Worthville, a son of the late Jacob A. and Ida Mae (Maurer) Dobson.
April 21, 1948, in Worthville, he married his wife of 64 years, Lois G. Fike, who survives.
Mr. Dobson was a veteran of World War II, having served on the USS McCracken and USS Talladega in the Pacific Theater.
Janet T. âToddyâ Mahan, 83, Warren, entered the presence of the Lord Wednesday, May 2, 2012, after a short illness.
She was born Oct. 14, 1928, in Oliver Township, a daughter of the late John and Edna (Lingenfelter) Todd.
March 31, 1951, in Winchester, Va., she married Gordon David Mahan, who preceded her in death May 5, 2008.
