Despite deep field, Punxsy strives for trips to states

PUNXSUTAWNEY — This afternoon, four AAA schools from District IX will send their best athletes to compete at the D-IX Track and Field Championships in Kane, and Punxsy head coach Barry Young said this year's field is one of the deepest and strongest he has seen in some time.

Chucks' No. 2 seeds look to dethrone king seeds

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Five teams will travel to the boys' District IX Track and Field Championships this afternoon at Kane, but two are considered powerhouses — DuBois and Bradford — and it's expected to be a back-and-forth event for the two teams. But that doesn't mean Punxsy's squad doesn't have high aspirations of earning a few surprise first-place finishes and moving on to the state tournament May 31 at Shippensburg University.

"The bottom line is, it looks like it will be a big cat and mouse game between Bradford and DuBois," Punxsy head coach John Smith said.

With the busy graduation season ahead, the Punxsy Lady Chucks softball team took a break from its final week of the regular season to hold its banquet Tuesday night at the Eagles. After the team and family members enjoyed a meal together, Punxsy head coach Alan Pifer and JV coach Ken Covatch each addressed their players and thanked them for the hard work they've put in this year. A slide show of memories throughout the season was shown, and the evening ended with Pifer recognizing the five senior members of his team.

Council OKs rezoning request for new one-stop medical facility

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Council approved a request to rezone the area of Prushnok Drive from industrial to town center commercial to accommodate the planned construction of a new health care facility in that area.

The zoning change had already been approved by the Planning Commission.

Twenty-two-year old Mathieu Krsnik, of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, has visited Boston and locations in New York state, but he hopes to see much more — all before the second weekend in June — of the United States on a cycling trip all the way to Florida.

Board president explains Jeff Tech program decision
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Monday, Punxsutawney Area School Board President Gary Conrad confirmed that the Jeff Tech Joint Operating Committee voted unanimously to discontinue its lumbering and marketing/retailing programs, but plans to offer other shops in their places.

Facing declining enrollment and funding issues, the committee voted to
discontinue the programs May 3.

Ursula Concetta (Mondi) Albino, 76

Ursula Concetta (Mondi) Albino, 76, Walston, died Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born July 7, 1935, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Anthony and Rose (Adams) Mondi.

In 1969, she married Joseph “Muz” Albino, who survives.

Mrs. Albino was a special education teacher in the Punxsutawney Area School District for 35 years.

She attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned her master’s degree from Penn State University.
