April 22, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — As the warmer weather returns, more and more people will be spending time outdoors at lakes and streams where water-related accidents might occur, which is why the Punxsutawney Fire Department has a water rescue team.

The team was formed in 1974, and in the 90s, the boat crew and dive team were combined into the water rescue team, said Matt Powell, dive master for the Punxsutawney Fire Department.

Decorating job a piece of cake

SMICKSBURG — Star Wars, Bob the Builder, the Steelers, Mickey Mouse, Toy Story, Super Mario, Hello Kitty, WWE, Pokemon, pigs, penguins, lions, tigers and bears — oh my! All of these designs have been made into cakes by Jessica Fairman, of Fairman's Cakes.

Just about any idea that can be dreamed up, she can make into a cake.
Five years ago, Fairman decided to take cake designing classes at Michael's in Indiana and discovered she really enjoyed the trade. She said she has always had an interest in art and found her niche when she applied it to sculpting cakes.

Lady Chucks' comeback comes up just short

April 21, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In a game that saw a number of zeroes on the scoreboard — 12 to be exact — it was a pair of big half innings that told the offensive story in Punxsy's varsity softball game against State College Friday in Punxsutawney.

Unfortunately for the Lady Chucks, their big inning came up just short of matching State College's, and they fell 4-3 to the Little Lions.

One of the things that stood out about State College's big inning — the third, during which it scored four runs — was that while the Little Lions had three hits, Punxsy also helped them with a pair of fielding errors.

The JVs do it again: Punxsy downs State College, 8-1

April 21, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — While the varsity squad dropped a heart-breaking game to the Little Lions of State College Friday, the JV team continued to roll with an 8-1 victory over the same foe.

Punxsy pitchers Sarah London and Lauren Wolfe tag teamed the pitching effort, with London pitching the first four and Wolfe closing out the game.

London allowed just one run on four hits, while walking one and striking out three, and Wolfe allowed one hit in her three shutout innings. She struck out one and walked one.
