Fourteen 1st places lead Punxsy to Senior Night victory

PUNXSUTAWNEY — On a day aimed at recognizing the contributions of the senior members of the team, Punxsy's girls' track and field squad did pulled out a 98.33-51.67 victory over Redbank Valley Monday in Punxsutawney.

En route to picking up the victory, the Lady Chucks nabbed first place in 14 of the 18 scheduled events.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — On a day chosen to honor its senior members, the Punxsy boys' track team dominated on both sides — 50-13 in the field and 56-31 on the track — to earn a 106-44 victory over the Redbank Valley Bulldogs Monday in Punxsutawney.

Punxsy head coach John Smith was especially pleased with the results in the field.

"We had some really strong showings and some personal bests in the field," Smith said. "We had some sweeps and some very nice improvements in the shot and discus. Brody Morgan had a good javelin throw. We were very pleased with scoring over 50 points there."

Lady Chucks JVs keep the bats hot with 18-2 victory over Golden Tide

CURWENSVILLE — After a long layoff, the Lady Chucks JV softball squad showed no signs of rust Friday when it traveled to Curwensville, putting up an impressive 18 runs in an 18-2, four-inning victory over the Golden Tide.

"This was a quality team effort by everyone," Punxsy head coach Phil Mennitti said. "Every player did their job at the plate by either collecting walks or putting the bats on the ball for RBIs. Coach (Brad) Constantino and I were pleased with their performance tonight on offense and defense."

PUNXSUTAWNEY — On the eve of lawmakers returning to Harrisburg to hash out details of Gov. Tom Corbett's proposed 2012-13 budget, state Sen.
Joe Scarnati said there's bright spots and not-so-bright spots.

"Revenues are improving, so that's a bright spot," Scarnati, who also serves as president pro tem in the state Senate, told The Spirit last Thursday.

A $700 million shortfall, however, is not a bright spot, he said, and neither is the slow pace of recovery.

Smicksburg Heritage Society pays tribute to decades past

SMICKSBURG — The Smicksburg Heritage Society's museum showcases what life was like in the early 20th century.

The museum has a strong focus on the 1930s and 1940s, which provides a different perspective compared to many museums that tend to focus on the Victorian era.

"There was no colonial period (in Smicksburg); they (settlers) didn't come out here until afterwards, so in 1820 or so, then it really started to get settled," said Lynn Duncan, museum director.

Leadership conference to be broadcast live

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you consider yourself to be a leader in your field or have always wanted to be, then you'll want to attend the 12th-annual Chick-Fil-A Leadercast to be broadcast live Friday from Atlanta, Ga., at the First Church of God in Punxsutawney.

"It's a one-day leadership event with 10 different speakers scheduled to talk about the various aspects of leadership," said Mike Hammer, youth pastor at First Church of God in Punxsutawney.

Guy R. Siverling, Sr., 81

Guy R. Siverling, Sr., 81, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, April 29, 2012, at UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

He was born Oct. 31, 1930, in Oliveburg, a son of the late Carlos and Irene (Means) Siverling.

Nov. 14, 1951, in Valier, he married Geraldine L. Phillips, who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was a coal miner and trucker who retired in 1988.
