Fedigan honored for success on field, in classroom

PUNXSUTAWNEY — While every move Punxsy's high school athletes make on the court is accessible for all to see, a number of PAHS student athletes are also excelling in other areas off the court — areas such as academics.

This past week, Punxsy senior Alex Fedigan, son of Tom and Melissa Fedigan, was informed by head football coach Alan Nichol of an honor he received for displaying leadership not only on the football field last fall but in the classroom, as well: Being named to the Pennsylvania Football News All-Academic Team - Gold Level.

EARLY SUCCESS

While open season for spring gobbler doesn't begin in Pennsylvania until Saturday, junior hunters were allowed an opportunity to get an early start with a mentored youth hunt last Saturday. Fifteen-year-old Hailey Brady was among those who cashed in on the head start, bagging this 19-pound gobbler with a 9 1/2-inch beard while hunting with her step-father, John Yenzi, near her home in Knox Township.

PUC drops idea of splitting the 814 area code

HARRISBURG — After almost two years of research and hearings regarding the possible split of the 814 area code — or the implementation of a new area code, 582 — the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) Thursday voted to dismiss the relief plan and implementation schedule of the geographic split.

That’s good news for area residents and local businesses, according to state Sen. Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson).

CDBG funds to go toward Cherry Street renovation

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It looks as if Cherry Street will receive some much-needed attention as Punxsutawney Borough Council approved street renovations at Tuesday’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Public Hearing and special council meeting.

Borough Manager Ben White said the borough has chosen the renovation of Cherry Street — from Carlton Avenue to North Findley Street — as its 2012 CDBG project.

White said the work proposed involves street renovations, replacing the deteriorating railing with a guardrail and installing a storm drain.

Edna B. Anderson, 95

April 26, 2012

Edna B. Anderson, 95, Fordham, died Wednesday, April, 25, 2012, at Wellington Heights, Punxsutawney.

She was born Aug. 25, 1916, in Frostburg, a daughter of the late Russell and Elizabeth (Douthit) Means.

June 20, 1938, she married Lorren (P.a.) Anderson, who preceded her in death May 27, 1993.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Valier United Methodist Church, and she enjoyed baking, cooking, quilting, bowling and watching the Pirates.

She was the last remaining member of her family.

Charles John Hook, 76

Charles John Hook, 76, Mooresville, N.C., formerly of Mahaffey, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Md.

A graduate of Punxsutawney High School, Mr. Hook was a pipefitter by trade for General Motors in Lockport, N.Y., having served on the Apprentice Program.

He was a member of the UAW Local 686 in Lockport and sang in the glee club at General Motors.
