BRADFORD — With a two-hour-plus bus ride to Bradford, the Lady Chucks softball team headed north Wednesday evening and made the trip well worth it, as pitchers Ashley Bacha and Monica Cameron combined to pitch a perfect game in Punxsy'a 18-0, four-inning win.

Bacha pitched the first three innings to earn the win, striking out all nine batters she faced, and Cameron pitched the final inning in relief, striking out one to preserve the perfect game.

The Zak Zone

April 25, 2012

Last week, I wrote about the importance of realizing that sometimes, in life, you're going to lose — or, your favorite professional team is going to lose.

Sunday, I found myself slumped on my couch, staring at the wall thinking, "The Penguins can't be done."

Tuesday, I awoke with the initial thought, "It's a great day for hockey," and sent my mom a text saying, "It just feels like the Penguins should be playing today."

But, alas, the NHL season — at least for my favorite team — has come to an end.

BROOKVILLE — Updated — yet still unofficial — totals from Tuesday’s primary election show an even narrower margin in the 66th District race between incumbent Sam Smith and challenger Cris Dush in Jefferson County, but at the end of the day, it was other precincts in the district that carried Smith to his ultimate victory.

No talk of recount in 66th race

Unofficial results show that Cris Dush collected 2,459 votes (46 percent) over Sam Smith’s 2,388 votes (45 percent), a difference of only 71 votes.

A second challenger for Smith, Dr. James M. Brown, collected 441 votes (8 percent).

Seven absentee ballots couldn’t be counted because of mistakes with ballots.

NEW SIGNALS

April 25, 2012

The end is in sight, as workers from Power Contracting test and activate the new $1.1 million traffic light system on Mahoning Street in downtown Punxsutawney Wednesday and today. In addition to activating the new signals at the four intersections, the video cameras had to be lined up properly in order to identify when traffic is waiting at the intersection for the signal to change. The old traffic signal poles will be removed and sidewalk rehabilitation and reseeding between Jefferson Street and Hampton Avenue will occur where those poles once stood. (Photo by Larry McGuire)
