Hangs Himself

The body of James B. McCullough, of Beechwoods, was found suspended from a tree near Coal Glen, on Saturday morning last by A. H. Smith, of the latter place.

Chucks' bid at D-IX title comes up just short

CLARION — The Punxsy boys' basketball team traveled to Clarion Saturday with hopes of reaching one of its loftiest preseason goals — a District IX AAA Championship — and unfortunately for the Chucks, they came up just short in a 36-35 loss to D-IX foe Bradford.

Despite the final score, Punxsy head coach Dirk Neal said he appreciated the effort his team gave him, adding that he wouldn't have changed a thing.

John William "Bill" Lott, 82

March 4, 2012

John William "Bill" Lott, 82, Big Run, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 27, 1929, in Reynoldsville, a son of the late Irvin and Ethel (Scaddin) Lott.

He was married to Vivian (Carney) Lott, who preceded him in death July 4, 2009.

Mr. Lott was an operating engineer for the Bracken Construction Co. and served as a 3rd Class Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a member of Dad's Horseshoe Club and was a past president of the Groundhog CB Club.

Phyllis Kunselman, 81

March 4, 2012

Phyllis Kunselman, 81, Rossiter, died Sunday, March 4, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of the McCabe Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In a sports-rich area like western Pa., playing for a district title is never a given, and the Punxsy boys' basketball team, which will do just that against the Bradford Owls at 4 p.m. today at Clarion University, isn't taking the opportunity for granted.

Langley, Bowers earn Regional semi-final berths

ALTOONA — Entering Friday's opening rounds of the Northwest AAA Regional Tournament, Punxsy's wrestling team had high hopes but no set expectations for its grapplers but to give it their all.

A pair of Chucks — sophomore Joel Bowers and senior Carl Langley — met their highest expectations and earned a pair of victories to open the tournament, putting them each one win away from the PIAA State Tournament next weekend in Hershey.

Brookville drops tough final against Smethport

CLARION — Brookville has had just one thing on its mind since the beginning of the 2011-2012 season: To be three-peat District IX Class AA champions.

The Raiders stormed to a successful 18-6 season, worked their way into the final for the third consecutive year and gave themselves the opportunity to achieve that goal.

But Friday night at Clarion University, Brookville met its match in the Smethport Hubbers (18-5), and the Hubbers captured their first District IX Class AA championship in school history by taking down Brookville, 47-38.

Cancer society seeking volunteers to help transport patients

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Ursula Albino and her husband, Joe, have enjoyed the last 20 years of their retirement, but in that time, they have also found ways to give back to others.

Most recently, in 2010, they signed up to volunteer for the American Cancer Society's (ACS) Road to Recovery program, which pairs community volunteers with cancer patients to provide rides to and from cancer treatments.

But in the last two years, the Albinos have remained the only volunteers covering Jefferson County, so they are seeking some extra hands.

Students celebrate reading, Dr. Seuss’ birthday

BELL TOWNSHIP — Punxsutawney Area School District elementary schools celebrated "Read Across America Day” and Dr. Seuss' birthday at the same time.

The National Education Association's “Read Across America” is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading and the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss March 2.

“Anything that promotes reading is a wonderful thing," said Sherri Spicher, first-grade teacher at Bell Township Elementary School.

Mildred Bellas, 94

March 2, 2012

Mildred Bellas, 94, formerly of Rockland Avenue, died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Wellington Heights.

She was born May 7, 1917, in Idamar, a daughter of the late John and Catherine (Cicaniak) Kutney.  

She was the last surviving member of her family.

Nov. 25, 1939, she married Dominick Joseph Bellas, who preceded her in death July 6, 1990. They were married for 50 years.

She was a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church.

Mrs. Bellas enjoyed her family and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed crocheting.
