Gertrude Ames, 93

March 9, 2012

Gertrude Ames, 93, Mayport, went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 8, 2012, at McKinley Health Center, Brookville.

She was born Aug. 15, 1918, in Oliver Township, Jefferson County, a daughter of the late Wilson and Edna (Brosius) Hoffman.

Feb. 29, 1936, she married Howard Ames, who preceded her in death July 2000.

Mrs. Ames was a lifetime member of the Langville Methodist Church, where she was treasurer for 55 years and enjoyed teaching Sunday School.

Burr Berringer Sr., 86

Burr Berringer Sr., 86, Rossiter, passed away Friday, March 9, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born Dec. 7, 1925, in Rossiter, a son of the late Blair and Nellie (Smyers) Berringer.

He was married to Betty Lou (Mullins) Berringer, who preceded him in death Feb. 16, 2007.

Mr. Berringer was employed by I.A. Construction for 34 years before retiring. He was a lifetime member of the Punxsutawney Eagles and Moose.

He enjoyed camping, fishing and was an expert homemade wine maker.

Manley Jay “Butch” Toy, 69

Manley Jay “Butch” Toy, 69, Hamilton-Markton Road, Punxsutawney, died Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born Oct. 26, 1942, in Rouseville, a son of the late John and Margaret (King) Toy.

He is the step-son of Bev Toy, who survives, of North Carolina.

In July 1968, he married Gloria Diane Carcella, who preceded him in death Nov. 19, 2005.

Mr. Toy served in the U.S. Navy.

He had previously worked as a welder for General Electric in Erie.

He enjoyed his family, playing guitar and woodworking.

Punxsy’s model tech program attracts curious districts for insight

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area School District’s use of technology — specifically its one-to-one, or 1:1 program, in which all students in grades nine through 12 are issued laptop computers for use at school and home — has attracted enough praise and recognition that it has become a model for other districts to study.

Still rolling: Punxsy sweeps past Lady Dutch

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Both of Punxsy's middle school girls' volleyball teams continued what have proven to be successful seasons thus far, with sweeps over the Lady Dutch of St. Marys Thursday afternoon in Punxsutawney.

The afternoon began with a pair of seventh-grade wins, 25-18 and 25-10.

Punxsy head coach Jacque Curtis said after the match that she was very pleased with the way her girls performed.

"They're really coming together well," she said. "We played very well today, and we're showing signs of improvement."

Bowers bows out of states; Winter sports season closes

HERSHEY — Punxsy wrestling's Joel Bowers, a sophomore at 113 pounds, was the final active athlete in the PAHS winter sports season, as he headed to the PIAA State Wrestling Championship Tournament Thursday in Hershey.

Unfortunately for the Chucks, Bowers' season came to a close with a pair of losses at the state level Thursday.

Bowers, the northwest region's second seed, faced District X's Dalton Macri, of Canon-McMillan, in the opening round of the tournament Thursday morning.
