Smith’s 66th District opponents take aim at him, Harrisburg at Republican event

REYNOLDSVILLE — Two Republican candidates seeking the 66th Legislative District seat in the state House of Representatives said Thursday night that Harrisburg regulates its constituents too much and is not pushing a conservative agenda, despite the Republican majority.

Meanwhile, the man they hope to unseat — incumbent House Speaker Sam Smith — stood on his record and as a leading voice for rural Pennsylvania.

Punxsy board unhappy with USDA cost mandates

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Members of the Punxsutawney Area School Board say they dislike the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA ) mandating price increases for school lunches.

District Cafeteria Manager Denise Geist said the USDA eventually wants all of the school districts to get to $2.51 as the price per lunch.
She said she thinks the district should raise the price of a lunch for next year by 10 cents.

“We can raise it a nickel like we did last year,” Geist said, adding that the operative number for last year was $2.46 per lunch.

'Polished' Beavers squad too much for Chucks

DUBOIS — Coming off a convincing win against DuBois Central Catholic Tuesday, the Punxsy boys' tennis team knew it'd have its hands full Thursday against the DuBois Beavers in DuBois, and the Beavers proved to be too much in a 7-2 victory over the Chucks.

"We knew DuBois would be a little more polished, because they were a little more experienced," Punxsy head coach Todd Heigley said after the match.

One thing stood out to Heigley as an area the team could have improved its chances: Being more aggressive on the offensive end.

Lula P. Hetrick, 94

March 29, 2012

Lula P. Hetrick, 94, Dora, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Brookville Hospital.

She was born April 23, 1917, in Dora, Ringgold Township, Jefferson County, a daughter of the late Winfield and Edna Pearl (Reed) Mowrey.
She was a lifetime resident of Dora.
