PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy boys' track and field team is off to the races, and with a pair of dual meet wins — 93.5-56.5 over Hollidaysburg and 105-45 over ECC — things are looking bright for the Chucks so far.

"Overall, we got off to a good start," Punxsy head coach John Smith said. "We had a lot of kids scoring, and all of the teams were glad to get one under their belts."

Coach Young likes what he sees, ECC drops Lady Chucks

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With some mechanical difficulties preventing Hollidaysburg's girls' track team from making the trip to Punxsy, the pair of dual meets the Lady Chucks had scheduled for Tuesday turned into a single dual meet against Elk County Catholic, and the Lady Crusaders earned an 87-63 victory over Punxsy in the season opener.

Despite the final result, Punxsy head coach Barry Young was pleased with his squad's performance against a difficult ECC team.

PAMS students see fruition of December tulip planting

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It was perhaps difficult to realize with 40-some degree temperatures Tuesday, but yet another sign that spring is here bloomed this week at the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center.

In December, five Punxsutawney Area Middle School fifth-graders — John Buffington, Guy Heckler, Bailey Jones, Megan Ray and Liam Storms, advised by Jeff Kuntz — began their participation in Journey North’s Tulip Garden and Climate Change study, during which they planted Red Emperor tulips and tracked the approach of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

VARIETY SHOW STARTS THURSDAY

Members of the PAHS Class of 2012 practice the first number of this year’s Variety Show, which begins Thursday night. What will you see during the rest of the show, this year themed “Hold On to the Memories?” You’ll have to find out for yourself, when the 2012 Variety Show kicks off at 7 p.m. Thursday and also continues Friday and Saturday in the PAHS auditorium.

Jeff Tech committee refutes claims of discontinuing lumbering

REYNOLDSVILLE — Monday, supporters of the Jeff Tech lumbering program presented their case as to why the program should not be discontinued due to high expenses.

“Lumbering is one of the most dangerous professions, and thanks to the Jeff Tech program, students have learned how to be safe in the woods while logging,” Harry Bressler, a lumbering class advocate, said during the Jeff Tech Joint Operating Committee’s (JOC) meeting Monday.

Bressler said some of the lumbering equipment was donated to the program.

E. Eugene "Gene" Kauffman, 80

E. Eugene "Gene" Kauffman, 80, Punxsutawney, passed away Monday, March 26, 2012, at his home.

He was born June 21, 1931, in Mahaffey, a son of the late H. Clayton and Catherine Mae (Lee) Kauffman.

He was married to Eleanor May (Smith) Kauffman, who survives, of Punxsutawney.

Mr. Kauffman was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War and 31 years in the National Guard.

He was retired from Season-All Industries and later worked part-time for CRW Home Supply, where he had many friends.
