After several idle weeks, the PAHS athletes will resume regular season contests as the spring sports season begins today. The baseball and softball teams will host Bradford today to open their seasons, with varsity and junior varsity contests scheduled for both. Boys' tennis and track will begin their schedules tomorrow with home meets against DCC and Hollidaysburg, respectively.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Almost everyone has enjoyed the abnormally warm weather throughout the winter season. But along with such weather comes an onslaught of deer ticks, or black-legged ticks, throughout the area.
Unseasonably warm weather has extended the season of activity for the ticks, said Dr. Tom Simmons, IUP professor of Biology and Public Environmental Health.
"With this unseasonably warm winter, it may not result in a population explosion of ticks this coming year," he said. "The tick populations were high last year, and they will remain high this year."

AN EXCITING RUNAWAY
James T. Lockard, 85, Brookville, died Friday, March 23, 2012, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.
He was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Montgomery Township, Indiana County, a son of the late Thomas Nelson and Alice (Sturgeon) Lockard.
Aug. 26, 1950, he married Marion "Mimi" Smith, who preceded him in death Feb. 6, 2012.
Mr. Lockard worked as a roofer and a carpenter.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper for the 472nd Glider BN in the Pacific Theater.
Ruby Tyger, 80, Rochester Mills, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
She was born April 20, 1931, in Leechburg, Armstrong County, a daughter of the late Leroy and Frances (Boyer) Wagner.
Dec. 27, 1952, she married Harold C. Tyger, who preceded her in death.
