CLARION — A young, energetic Golden Eagles softball team — one that includes a pair of former Lady Chucks players in freshmen Taylor Powell and Shawnna Crago — took the field last Monday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., to kick off the 2012 Clarion University softball season.

Grant funds to provide gambling addiction programs

FALLS CREEK — Residents in rural Jefferson and Clearfield counties may be a two-hour drive from casinos in Pittsburgh and Salamanca, N.Y., but gambling is just as accessible with an Internet connection.

More than four years after casinos began operating in western Pennsylvania, the Clearfield-Jefferson Drug & Alcohol Commission is trying to address the needs of people in the two-county region, calling attention to potential gambling-addiction problems.

Council OKs rezoning south side of Union St.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — During a special meeting Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Council voted in favor of changing an ordinance designating the south side of Union Street to be town center commercial.

Prior to the vote, council conducted a public hearing to address the suggested rezoning of the south side of Union Street to allow for a beauty shop to open in a house on the Shumaker property.
