Jeff Tech locked down, evacuated after threat via social media

REYNOLDSVILLE — A male juvenile was arrested for making threats of violence against students at the Jefferson County-DuBois Area Vocational Technical School (Jeff Tech) Tuesday morning.

According to DuBois-based Pennsylvania State Police, a threat was made via a social media outlet against Jeff Tech students, implying that firearms and explosives would be used against members of the student population.

According to police, it was determined that a 16-year-old male juvenile acted alone in the commission of this crime and will be charged with disorderly conduct.

National Weather Service cites Jefferson County for its hazardous weather preparedness

BROOKVILLE — Tuesday, Jefferson County was recognized as one of 47 counties across the state for its achievement of StormReady status.

The status, acknowledged by the National Weather Service, means the Jefferson County community has taken a proactive approach to improving local hazardous weather operations and public awareness with the local National Weather Service office in Pittsburgh.

Tracy Zents, director of the Jefferson County Department of Emergency Services, said the recognition is positive for the county.

Police: Two injured in Monday night crash in downtown area

PUNXSUTAWNEY — East Mahoning and North Findley Streets were shut down for about 45 minutes Monday following a three-vehicle accident that occurred around 7:17 p.m. Monday.

According to Punxsutawney Borough Police, a 1994 Subaru sedan driven by Tina McCracken, Punxsutawney, was traveling west on East Mahoning Street, while a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Sean Fitzgerald, Big Run, was traveling north on North Findley Street, and a 2006 Chevrolet driven by a 16-year-old juvenile was traveling south on North Findley Street, waiting to make a left turn to travel east on East Mahoning Street.

Middle school VB getting in the swing of things

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Lady Chucks middle school volleyball team opened its season last Thursday against Brockway and continued Tuesday afternoon against the Lady Beavers of DuBois.

Last Thursday, the eighth-grade squad defeated the Lady Rovers to start the season off on the right foot.

In the first game, Punxsy picked up a win behind Emma White's eight aces, including one on game point to seal the game.

"Overall, it was just a really good game," Punxsy head coach Megan Decker said. "Emma's serves were really good, and that definitely helped."

Margie Astorino, 63

Margie Astorino, 63, Walston, died Monday, Feb.27, 2012, at Mulberry Square Eldercare and Rehabilitation Center in Punxsutawney, after a 21-year, courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Oct. 26, 1948, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Ross and Antoinette (Belott) Astorino.

She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Walston, as well as a member of the Walston Club.

William E. Beezer, 82

February 28, 2012

William E. Beezer, 82, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at Tidewell Hospice in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born Jan. 16, 1930, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Edward and Caroline (Lamison) Beezer.

He moved to the Punta Gorda area a year ago from Thomasville, Ga.

Mr. Beezer worked in pharmaceutical sales before retiring.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mr. Beezer was Protestant by faith.

Eleanor Joan (Clinger) Kent, 82

February 28, 2012

Eleanor Joan (Clinger) Kent, 82, Punxsutawney, formerly of Clarion, died Feb. 27, 2012, at her home.

She was born July 23, 1929, in Corsica, a daughter of the late George Leo and Alice Ethel (Snyder) Clinger.

Oct. 14, 1959, she married her husband of 43 years, Ralph Owen Kent, who preceded her in death Oct. 14, 1993.

Mrs. Kent worked at the Brookville Glove Factory as a seamstress; the O-I Glass plant in Clarion; Clarion University; Clarion Hospital; and Clarion Area Schools as a cook and dietary aide. She was a member of the O-I Auxiliary.
