PUNXSUTAWNEY — It was Senior Night on the mats at the PAHS gymnasium for the Chucks wrestling team, which took on Bradford Tuesday night, and despite a small Bradford squad, Punxsy was able to match each senior with an opponent and come out victorious, 54-15, over the Owls.
"The kids wrestled really well tonight," Punxsy coach Eric Eddy said after the match. "Each senior was able to get a match in, and it was good to pick up the win on Senior Night."
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The three-year-old PAHS Drama Club is preparing its third production, “Once Upon A High School,” which runs at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the high school auditorium.
The play, by Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus, explores two different worlds: The world of fairy-tale characters such as Cinderella, Prince Charming, Snow White, etc., and a reality-based world familiar to high school students of today.
BROOKVILLE — Monday night, Gov. Tom Corbett signed into law a long-debated bill that imposes an impact fee on Marcellus Shale gas extraction.
Tuesday, the Jefferson County Commissioners completed their part in the process by passing an ordinance that will give authority to municipalities and townships in the county to pass a resolution which will allow county municipalities and townships to receive impact money.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council and PennDOT will replace the sanitary sewer line that is part of a combined system during the replacement of the Elk Run Route 119 bridge this summer.
Engineer Brian Sekula told council that the borough would be responsible for half of the cost to move the former combined sewer line and replace it with a new sanitary line if it partnered with PennDOT.
Sekula said if the borough were to do the project by itself, it would cost $200,000. If PennDOT and the borough partner in the replacement, the cost would be $100,000.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The buzz around the PAHS gym after Punxsy senior guard Alex Magill, the team's only senior, was recognized on her Senior Night before the girls' varsity game against A-C Valley was, "It's a shame Friday wasn't senior night."
That's because Magill hit a go-ahead three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Lady Chucks a three-point victory Friday over DuBois.
Monday night was no less fitting, though, as Magill pulled off the once-in-a-lifetime sort of feat twice in four days, draining a deep two as the clock ticked to zero to give Punxsy a 49-47 win over the Lady Falcons.
HOMER CITY — The Punxsy Chucks basketball team went on the road to take on the Bobcats of Homer Center Monday night in an out-of-league contest that proved to be a good tune-up game heading into its final two league games Wednesday and Friday. But the Chucks came away with a 68-64 victory over Homer Center in what Punxsy head coach Dirk Neal called "a full team effort."
Punxsy senior guard Alex Fedigan was sidelined with an injury, forcing fellow-senior Ian Miller into the starting lineup, and Miller proved to be one of four Chucks scorers in double digits.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Just months after a presentation by Jefferson County Sheriff Carl Gotwald and his K-9 unit, Bret, the Punxsutawney Area School Board met yet another four-legged officer during its meeting Monday.
St. Marys City Police Officer Mike Shaffer introduced his K-9 unit, Copper, to the board Monday and said having the K-9 unit in St. Marys and the surrounding area has proven to deter people from bringing drugs into the area.
St. Marys is not a huge area, Shaffer said, but noted that he makes dozens of drug arrests per year, but mostly outside the city.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Council approved holding a public hearing to address the suggested rezoning of the south side of Union Street to allow for a beauty shop to open in a house on the Shumaker property.
Members of the borough’s Planning & Zoning Commission passed a motion at their Jan. 25 meeting, which recommended to council permitting the temporary occupancy for the Shumaker property to allow a temporary variance beauty shop in the traditional neighborhood district, pending approval by Solicitor Jay Lundy.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — In a collaborative effort, two local historical societies are taking the history of the American Civil War and shrinking it down to a local, Jefferson County perspective.
From now through October, the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society will provide local residents with “Drumbeat to War,” an exhibit that was previously housed at the Jefferson County History Center (JCHC) in Brookville.
Stanley “Stush” P. Dudek, 78, Arcadia, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at his home.
He was born Oct. 15, 1933, in Arcadia, a son of Michael P. and Julia (Stoyak) Dudek.
April 29, 1994, he married Elizabeth “Ann” (Patchin) Wetzel, who survives.
Mr. Dudek was a member of the Burnside United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, retiring as a major. His service spanned tour of duties during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
Following his retirement from the military, he was employed as a bus driver for the Purchase Line School District.
