BRADFORD — Entering Friday night's contest with the Bradford Owls, Punxsy had the advantage of already knowing it was the No. 1 seed entering the District IX playoffs.
But the Owls had the advantage of picking up a road win at Punxsy Jan. 20, and Friday, Bradford made it a season sweep, setting up an interesting potential D-IX Title Game Mar. 3 at Clarion University with a 53-38 win over the Chucks.
But Punxsy has a bye in the playoffs and won't play again until the championship game, and the Owls have to defeat Clearfield to earn the right for the rematch.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — As was the case a majority of their matches this season, the members of the Punxsy junior high wrestling team found themselves at a disadvantage Thursday against DuBois with Punxsy forced to forfeit in five weight classes, giving the Beavers an insurmountable edge in a 54-31 victory.
Without counting forfeits in the team scores, though, Punxsy would have been victorious, 25-12, in the bouts that took place on the mats.
VALIER— The Perry Township Volunteer Fire Company in Valier has been a large part of Kris Grove's life since the early '90s, and she recently accepted the position of fire chief.
As far as anyone familiar with fire department history can confirm, Grove is the first female fire chief in the history of Jefferson County.
Grove said she first became interested in joining the Perry Township Fire Company after having served as one of the fire hall cleaners.
"The reason I first joined was because I have a passion to help people," she said. "I believe when someone needs help, you help them."
Arthur N. “Shun” Pardee, 93, Rochester Mills, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at Crystal Waters in Rayne Twp., Indiana County.
He was born Oct. 22, 1918, in Rochester Mills, the son of the late Norman and Mary (Smith) Pardee.
June 19, 1943, he married Goldie (Ryen) Pardee, who survives, of Rochester Mills. They shared almost 69 years of marriage.
Connie L. Roush, 64, Carlisle, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at her home.
She was born Aug. 25, 1947, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Irvin L. Grube and Edna A. Hippehen.
She married Raymond Roush Jr., who survives, of Carlisle.
Mrs. Roush was a homemaker.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Linglestown.
Eleanor “June” (Baun) Ryen, 81, Rochester Mills, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.
She was born June 10, 1930, in Juneau, a daughter of the late Earl and Edna (White) Baun.
She married Jim Ryen, who preceded her in death April 26, 1997. They raised four children together.
She was a member of the Rochester Mills United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Ryen possessed a great deal of love for her children, grandchildren and her dog, Summer.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite what resembles a disappointing night on the scoreboard, Punxsy head coach Eric Eddy was well pleased with his team's performance in a 50-20 loss to the DuBois Beavers Thursday night in Punxsutawney — the Chucks' regular season finale.
"Overall, it was a very good match tonight," Eddy said. "The guys wrestled very well. There were some tight matches, and overall, I'm very pleased with our performance."
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Chucks' seventh-grade basketball team put up an impressive 50 points, and the defense played almost equally as impressively Monday night at Brockway helping the Chucks cruise to a 50-21 victory over the Rovers.
BROOKVILLE — Senior Night is always an important night for everyone involved. But Brookville's game Wednesday night was meaningful for a much bigger reason — the Raiders needed a win for a share of the D-IX League title.
Unfortunately, they were matched up against the DuBois Beavers, who had already secured their share of the title, and DuBois stormed to a 39-30 victory and became the lone title champions.
BROOKVILLE — For 11 4-H members, Tuesday will be the most critical day of a six-week endeavor that began in January.
Last month, 11 4-H students from Jefferson and Clearfield counties began building a robot to compete in a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) — marking the first time 4-H members in the area became involved in this national project.
“It’s coming along,” team member Matt Vipond said. “We’re going to be going right up to the buzzer here, but I think we’ll make it.”
