Raiders ace big test against Johnsonburg

BROOKVILLE — Heading into Monday night's game, the Brookville Raiders knew they were facing one of the district's best basketball squads in the Johnsonburg Rams.

But the Raiders prevailed, putting up 11 points in overtime and holding the Rams to just four to earn the 64-55 victory.

"I thought it was a pretty fierce game, physical underneath, and you had two teams out there that didn't want to lose," Brookville head coach Bud Baughman said. "Fortunately, we had a few lucky breaks for us; that was the difference in the game."

Delmont "Smokey" Woods, 79

Delmont "Smokey" Woods, 79, Rossiter, passed away Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born April 8, 1932, in Rossiter, a son of the late John and Edith (Oaks) Woods.

July 5, 1980, he married Elizabeth (Vandervort) Woods, who preceded him in death Sept. 23, 2011.

Mr. Woods was an avid baseball fan and also loved football and fishing.

Brookville's Young named to 3rd Team All-State

BROOKVILLE — Brookville senior Jordan Young lined up on offense every Friday night during the 2011 football season.

He helped lead the corps, serving as a team captain, and dominated game in and game out, and recently, he was recognized for his efforts.

The Pennsylvania Football News released its All-State Football teams Jan. 4, and Brookville senior Jordan Young was named to the third team as an offensive lineman.

Pitcher Barrett heading to California Winter League

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — Many children grow up playing baseball and dream of someday playing in the major leagues.

Brookville's Ryan Barrett is one step closer to achieving that dream, as he was selected recently to play in the California Winter League (CWL), a prestigious instructional league from which many players are selected to play professionally.

"I'm hoping to get picked up by a team," Barrett said before leaving for Palm Springs, Calif., today. "It's my dream to play professional baseball; that's what I've been working for my entire life."

Corbett to trek with Punxsy Phil Feb. 2

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Break out the red carpet for the Groundhog Day trek to Gobbler's Knob for two important figures: Punxsutawney Phil and Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett.

The Groundhog Club's Inner Circle confirmed last week that Corbett and his wife, Susan, will indeed attend Groundhog Day 2012, serving as the guest speaker at the annual Groundhog Banquet Feb. 1 and making the trek with the Inner Circle the morning of Feb. 2.

The official announcement from the Inner Circle coincides with the first day — today — that tickets for the banquet will be available.

Rebert murder trial starts today

BROOKVILLE — Jury selection was completed Friday for the trial of Steven Patrick Rebert, as 12 jurors and four alternates were chosen for the trial, which is set to begin with opening arguments at 9 a.m. today at the Jefferson County Courthouse.

Rebert, formerly of Emporium, faces double homicide charges in the shooting deaths of Victoria Lynn Shugar and her husband, James Shugar — also known as Wayne Shugar — both 61, who were found dead April 12, 2010, in their Coal Tipple Road home, Brockway.

Helen Bobette (Sutter) Lechner, 90, of Anchorage, Alaska, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, in Anchorage.

 Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of Shumaker Funeral Home Inc., Punxsutawney.

Mary Jane Miller, 68

January 15, 2012

Mary Jane Miller, 68, Brookville, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She was born Dec. 11, 1943, in Tonawanda, N.Y., a daughter of the late Marcel Russell and Hilda Madelyn (Lewis) Wazelle.

May 25, 1974, she married the love of her life, Wayne Arthur Miller, who preceded her in death Oct. 1, 2009.

Mrs. Miller was a member of the Nazerene Church in Anita.

She and her husband lived most of their lives in Wyoming, where they enjoyed riding horses, backpacking, square dancing, bowling and Black Powder Rendezvous.

Jeffrey (Petey) S. Peterman, 39

Jeffrey (Petey) S. Peterman Sr., 39, Punxsutawney,died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, at home after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born Nov. 30, 1972, in Indiana, a son of Margaret Diane (Peterman) Anderson, who survives, of Punxsutawney.

Mr. Peterman was a roofer.

He was a member of the Punxsutawney FOE, the American Legion and the Walston Club.
