PUNXSUTAWNEY —After a rocky start this season, Punxsy's ninth-grade boys' basketball team has picked up the pace and earned a second-consecutive victory over Brookville, 37-28, Monday afternoon in Punxsutawney.
Punxsy jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back to improve its record to 4-8 in 2011-12.
Defense: Jurors must also consider prison, not only death
BROOKVILLE — While District Attorney Jeffrey Burkett told the jury that it was “just” in finding Steven P. Rebert guilty in the 2010 shooting deaths of Wayne and Victoria Shugar, defense attorney Michael Marshall asked the jury to also find a “just” verdict during the penalty phase Thursday.
“Again, render a just verdict, and choose not to put Steven to death,” he said.
BROOKVILLE — As the penalty phase for Steven P. Rebert began Thursday — two days after he was found guilty of killing Wayne and Victoria Shugar, both 61, in their Coal Tipple Road, Brockway residence in April 2010 — District Attorney Jeffrey Burkett reminded the jury that it’s not all about whether it sends Rebert to prison for the rest of his life, or it sentences him to death.
The phase during which the jury explored Rebert’s innocence or guilt is over: The jury found him guilty of killing the Shugars, Burkett said, “and now, it’s not just about Steven Rebert anymore.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Not every win goes exactly as planned. Wednesday night was one of those victories for the Chucks basketball team, which hosted Keystone and squeezed by the Panthers, 50-47, in overtime to improve to 10-4 this season.
Punxsy head coach Dirk Neal said after the game that he knew from the beginning his team had to jump on Keystone or the Panthers would be dangerous if allowed to hang around.
For as long as I can remember, there are two men I could have been speaking of when I simply called someone Coach: My former hockey coach Doc Snyder and Joe Paterno.
This week, the world lost one of those men in the same manner I lost one of my other greatest mentors a year-and-a-half prior when my pap's battle with lung cancer came to a close.

DUBOIS — Students at Penn State’s DuBois branch campus joined in the chorus of voices Wednesday, remembering the life and legacy of legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.
Wednesday afternoon, students took part in a candlelight vigil near the campus Lion Shrine, honoring the memory of JoePa.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center is preparing to welcome its ninth inductee into the National Meteorologist Hall of Fame, Fred Gadomski, the host and co-producer of “Weather World,” a 15-minute nightly weather magazine program produced by the Penn State Weather Communications Group.
He will be inducted at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 — Groundhog Day — at the Weather Discovery Center, Punxsy.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Next Wednesday, the Punxsy Elks Club will host its 14th annual comedy night. The show will feature Michaelangelo as emcee and headliner Dan Long.
Long, an Ohio Native, has performed his high-energy act all over the country. A master of impressions, Long performs a spot-on impersonation of Jack Nicholson, Johnny Carson and others.
A former writer for “The Tonight Show,” this veteran of the stand-up comedy scene has performed from coast to coast.

Punxsy picks up win, but struggles on the mat
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Although some follow the old adage, "The numbers never lie," Tuesday night's wrestling match between the Chucks and the Clarion Bobcats proved to be a counterexample to the theory, with the Bobcats falling 30-21 to Punxsy despite only losing one match on the mat.
Marred by injuries, Clarion's squad dressed just five grapplers Tuesday, and four of the five earned victories.
