Punxsy wrestlers have tough night on mat in Clearfield

CLEARFIELD — Just as the weather was rainy outside Thursday night, the tough forecast inside the Clearfield High School gymnasium turned out to be the case.

The Punxsy wrestlers claimed only three victories against a veteran Clearfield squad to fall by a 63-12 score.

"Overall in the match, nothing went our way," explained Chucks head coach Eric Eddy. "You have nights like this, and I told the kids it is better to have it now than later (in the season). We were just outwrestled 
tonight."

Chucks start slow but fly past the Owls

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It may have taken most of the first quarter to come to life, but by midway through the second half, the Chucks boys' basketball team was on cruise control Thursday night, and after a Devin Nicholson basket five minutes into the game to give Punxsy the 6-5 lead, the Chucks would never trail again, as they flew past visiting Harmony, 54-31, in Punxsutawney.

The Chucks received an early boost off their bench from junior Michael Klingensmith, who finished with a season-best 10 points to go with four assists, six rebounds and a steal.

Wolfe talks school security, safety in wake of Newtown, Conn., tragedy

PUNXSUTAWNEY — You never stop thinking about protecting the students, faculty and staff from danger, not just when a tragedy happens such as the shootings in Newtown, Conn., said Dr. Keith Wolfe, Punxsutawney Area School District superintendent.

The fatal shooting of 20 children and six adults has caught the attention of school administrators around the world, with them asking if this could happen in their district at one of their schools?

Homer Charles “Chuck” Brocious, Jr., 60

Homer Charles “Chuck” Brocious, Jr., 60, of New Bethlehem, died suddenly Thursday morning, Dec. 20, 2012, in Wheeling, W.V., while working there.

He was born Feb. 13, 1952, in Punxsutawney, a son of Homer C., Sr. and Lucienne B. (Bullers) Brocious.

Chuck was married on March 3, 1979, to Janet A. (Elkin), who survives.

He was a supervisor for Doverspike Coal from 1970 to 1996, Shaw Coal Co. from 1996 to 2000 and then an equipment operator for Baker Hughes.

He also loved to farm and be with his family, who meant the world to him.

Helen L. Keck, 92

Helen L. Keck, 92, Punxsutawney, went home to her eternal home on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012.

She was born May 14, 1920, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Harvey C. and Amanda (Braniff) Lyle.

She married Alfred E. Keck on Aug. 7, 1939, and they had four children.

He passed away on Aug. 2, 2008.

She was a long-time member of the Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church and a long-time resident of Cherry Street, Punxsutawney.

She enjoyed cooking and baking.
