Anna M. Serge, 87

November 13, 2012

Anna M. Serge, 87, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Serge was born Dec. 24, 1924, in Valier, a daughter of the late Nicholas Schepis and Mary (Sano) Schepis.

Nov. 11, 1947, she married the love of her life, Joseph M. Serge, who preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 2012.

Mrs. Serge was a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church.

She worked many years as a legal secretary for Attorneys Ferraro and Young before retiring.

Ronald Zimmerman, 50

Ronald Zimmerman, 50, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at Heartland Health Care Center in Pittsburgh.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of the Richard L. Fait Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

Carl E. Benson, Sr., 78

November 12, 2012

Carl E. Benson, Sr., 78, of Punxsutawney, passed from this life on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, and into God’s eternal glory while surrounded by family who were lifting him up in prayer.

Born April 13, 1934, Carl was the son of Oscar C. and Henrietta M. (Harrold) Benson.

He was also a son of God, through his acceptance of his Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation. He lived a life that was defined by his love for these two families: earthly and spiritual.

Ruth I. Greenawalt, 90

Ruth I. Greenawalt, 90, Punxsutawney, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at AM/PM Personal Care Home.

She was born July 26, 1922, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late James and Sarah Jane “Jennie” (Sheesley) McClincy.

On Feb. 9, 1946, she married the late Clarence A. Greenawalt, who preceded her in death on July 26, 1985.

She worked in the office at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital for 24 years.

She was a member of the Punxsutawney Baptist Church and a member of the Historical Society for 18 years.

Spectacular ‘Nutcracker’ returns to kick off the 2012 holiday season

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The 2012 holiday season officially gets underway in this area at 7 p.m. Friday Nov. 23, and 2 p.m. Saturday Nov. 24, when Van 
Dyke and Company and the Mahoning Valley Ballet present the perennial favorite, “The Nutcracker,” on the stage of Punxsutawney Area High School. Directed by Joan E. Van Dyke, the elaborate production features more than 80 dancers performing to the music of Tchaikovsky. The performers, ranging from pre-schoolers to senior citizens, come from Punxsutawney, Clearfield, Clarion, DuBois, Brookville, Indiana, and the surrounding area.

The guys’ turn: King’s Court ceremony to take place at Powder Puff tonight

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The members of the senior class at Punxsutawney Area High School have voted six of their fellow classmates onto this year’s King’s Court. The King’s Court ceremony will take place during halftime of tonight’s annual Powder Puff football game, which will kickoff at 6 p.m. at Jack F. LaMarca Stadium.

The students at PAHS vote for King’s Court in the same manner as Homecoming Queen’s Court and Winter Queen’s Court.

Brookville football falls to Kane in OT heartbreaker, 35-34

KANE — Despite a valiant fourth quarter comeback, the Brookville Raiders football team fell to the Kane Wolves, 35-34, in a District IX AA semifinal overtime heartbreaker Friday night in Kane.

Back-to-back touchdown runs from running back Zach Vroman in the fourth quarter helped the Raiders establish their first lead of the night. With the score at 28-21 and 1:59 left on the clock, the Wolves took over from their own 28-yard line.

Veterans' Day recognized in Big Run

BIG RUN — VFW Post 9044 and the Ladies Auxiliary held their annual ceremony recognizing and celebrating Veterans' Day on Sunday at the Big Run War Memorial.

The ceremony also commemorated the 65th anniversary of Big Run VFW Post 9044 and honored its four living charter members, Richard Ellenberger, Sherman Hollopeter, Robert Kerr and Eugene North.

The speaker for the evening was Jeff Soliday, who also spoke at the two organizations' recognition of POW/MIA Day earlier this year, which doubled as a commemoration of his late father, Jim Soliday.

Mulberry Square honors veterans

PUNXSUTAWNEY— Sunday was a beautiful, warm day at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center, as the veterans who now reside there were honored.

The Veterans' Day program was started five years ago by Vickie Amundson, Mulberry activities director.

Having recognized that many of the veterans living at Mulberry Square couldn't get out to any of the other memorials, she decided to have one for them there.

"I feel they need recognition" said Amundson.
