Police searching for victims of egg vandalism

JEFFERSON COUNTY — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are looking for victims whose property, homes or vehicles were egged between 8 p.m. Nov. 17 and 1 a.m. Nov. 18.

According to police, five male juveniles and one adult female purchased 420 eggs — 35 dozen — using the female's ACCESS card.

Police said the actors then drove through several areas in the county, throwing the eggs at houses and cars.

The egging occurred in the areas of Punxsutawney, Anita, Big Run, Sykesville, Reynoldsville, Stump Creek, DuBois, McGees Mills, Burnside and Cherry Tree.

The Spirit office at 510 Pine St. will be closed Thursday, and there will be no newspaper printed in observance of Thanksgiving.

Normal business and printing schedules will resume Friday.

William "Bill" A. Condron, 66

November 20, 2012

William A. Condron, 66, of Big Run, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at VA Medical Center in Oakland.

Mr. Condron was born Feb. 10, 1946, in Echo, a son of the late Regis Condron and Luella (Neville) Condron.

March 3, 1967, he married his loving wife, Bernice A. (Mauk) Condron, who survives, of Big Run.

Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the CMA Church in Punxsutawney, where he coached youth basketball.

He was also a member of the VFW, American Legion and the NRA.

Clifton M. Murphy, 77

Clifton Meade Murphy, 77, Mt. Lebanon, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at the Hollidaysburg Veterans’ Home in Hollidaysburg.

He was born Nov. 20, 1934, in Big Run, Pa., a son of the late James W. and Margaret E. (Pooler) Murphy.

Clifton graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1952 and from Dickinson College, in Carlisle, Pa., in 1956. He earned a bacehlor’s degree and was commissioned a 2d LT in the U.S. Army Infantry.

Local public officials take time to ‘Invest in Kids,’ support early childhood programs

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A number of state and local politicians and officials, including Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief Tom Fedigan, Jefferson County Sheriff Carl Gotwald, Punxsutawney Mayor James Wehrle and State Senator Joseph Scarnati, the Pennsylvania Senate President Pro Tempore, visited the Punxsutawney Pre-K Counts classroom at the community center on Monday to support early childhood programs and to read to the children.

Also present were Karen Ray, the Jefferson County Pre-K Counts director, and Bruce Clash, the state director of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids.

Punxsy volleyball celebrate 'holding the rope' to a DIX title

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Most athletic teams take on a theme to their seasons, but the majority of the time they are left unfulfilled.

The Punxsy Lady Chucks volleyball did not let its "Holding the Rope" theme go by the way side but applied it and made it become a reality with the District IX AA championship to its credit.

The Lady Chucks celebrated their many successes and optimisms of the future on Sunday night at the New Anchor Inn in Punxsy at their season banquet.

Veterans encouraged to lend a handprint for memorial flag senior project

PUNXSUTAWNEY — PAHS senior Amy Jo Parente was in need of an idea for a senior project.

Deciding to see if anyone needed help at Mulberry Square Elder Care &

Rehabilitation Center, she met Vickie Amundson, Mulberry activities director, who came up with the idea of doing a handprint flag.

Veterans from all over are invited to take part in this project, where they will put their handprints on what soon will be a replica of the U.S. flag.

Currently, the blue field with white handprints as stars is already complete.

Now begins the process of making the red stripes.
