Chucks XC given royal escort, run at states today

HERSHEY — After taking not only one, but both District IX titles, the Punxsy boys' and girls' cross country teams were given the royal treatment as they headed out of Punxsutawney on Friday morning. The two squads will test their mettle against the best of the Pennsylvania's AA ranks today at Hershey's Parkview Cross Country Course adjacent to Hershey Park.

Strong finish takes Panthers past Chucks football

LOYSBURG – With the changing of quarters, so went the changing of the Punxsy Chucks' football fortunes on Friday night. Leading 21-14 after the first 36 minutes of action, Punxsy managed only 37 fourth-quarter yards and committed two turnovers, on which Northern Bedford capitalized for the game-winning points and a 27-21 home victory.

Halloween was a busy day for many preparing for trick-or-treaters. But it was also a busy day at Punxsutawney Area Hospital. While black and orange are known as Halloween colors, PAH was seeing pink and blue. Mercie Rae Wolfe, 37

Mercie Rae Wolfe, 37, of DuBois, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at the DuBois Regional Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 2, 1974, the daughter of Robert and Faithe (Copello) Brown, both of whom survive.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her parents; a daughter, Sirena M. Schachtner of Big Run; and a sister, Margaret Schachtner of Virginia.

Friends will be received at the Richard L. Fait Funeral home on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

A funeral service officiated by Pastor Kenneth Alt will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, at 8 p.m at the funeral home.

Randall J. "Buzzy" Buzard, 48

November 2, 2012

Randall J. "Buzzy" Buzard, 48, Brookville, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Born Sept. 21, 1964, in Brookville, he was the son of the late Donald J. Buzard and Linda F. Powell, who survives.

He worked as a crew leader and office manager for Plyler's At Your Service, Inc. of Brookville, and formerly worked at Morey's Beverage of Brookville. Randall was a member of the FOE No. 983 in Brookville.

Karen L. McKain, 61

November 2, 2012

Karen L. McKain, 61, of Smicksburg, passed away Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at UPMC Shadyside.

Ms. McKain was born May 28, 1951, in Punxsutawney. She is survived by her parents, Robert V. Stiteler and Natalie A. (Niel) Stiteler of Smicksburg.

Karen was a 20-year veteran of the US Air Force, retiring as a Staff Sergeant.

She was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Smicksburg. Her hobbies were gardening, reading, crocheting, shopping and collecting shells on the beach.

Punxsy Volleyball fulfills dream with D-IX gold

ST. MARYS — Every team dreams and sets goals for its seasons. The Lady Chucks volleyball team was able to fulfill its dream of District IX gold in dramatic fashion Thursday night at St. Marys High School.

Trailing by a game, Punxsy came together to take game four and outlasted Bradford, 18-16, in the match-deciding set to capture the program's seventh title in eight years.

"Everyone on this team contributed to this win tonight. It feels like a dream to bring the District Championship plaque back to Punxsutawney," exclaimed the winning head coach Heather Good.

In season finale, Chucks will try to poach the potent Panthers, gain PIAA Regional playoff berth

SHAFFER’S SENIOR PROJECT RAISES MONEY FOR WEATHER DISCOVERY CENTER

Senior Alexa Shaffer presented Mary Jean Johnston of the Weather Discovery Center with a check for $ 989.21. She was approached by her mentor, Sue Walher, who came up with the idea of selling food at the Music in the Park event. The event runs every summer from July 12th through Aug. 23rd. As part of her project, she set up a refreshments table where everyone could purchase slices of Laska's pizza, soda and water. The project was a success, with $989.21 being raised and donated to the Weather Discovery Center.
