Chucks FB to face D-IX champ Bison in playoffs

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite having a disappointing regular season finale, the Punxsy Chucks football team was able to qualify for the District V-VI-VIII-IX subregional playoffs. The foe will be a familiar one for Punxsy as it will travel over the mountain to tackle undefeated District IX champ Clearfield on Friday night in a 7 p.m. kickoff.

In the new format, the Chucks (5-5) enter the AAA subregional tournament as the fourth seed. Clearfield (10-0) holds the top seed.

In the other contest, third seed Somerset (5-5) will face University Prep (5-3) as the second seed.

Dinger medals to lead Punxsy boys XC at state meet

HERSHEY — After heading across the state of Pennsylvania with a lot of enthusiasm, sophomore Bo Dinger came across the finish line 19th to earn an All-State individual medal to lead the Punxsy boys' cross country team at the PIAA AA boys' cross country championships on Saturday afternoon in Hershey.

As a team, the Chucks completed the 5K Parkview Cross Country Course with 372 points in 18th of the extremely tough 19-team boys field, narrowly beat out by General McLane with 369 points in the program's first state team appearance since 1998.

Thornhill trial begins with opening statements

BROOKVILLE — The trial of Pittsburgh resident Christopher Lawrence Thornhill began Monday in Brookville with opening statements heard from the defense and the prosecution.

Thornhill faces two counts each of attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and weapons violations following a shooting incident that occurred on Sept. 22, 2011, near a residence on Cranberry Alley in Punxsutawney.

Public Works Committee reports on leaf collection, PennDOT railroad project

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Committee held its Public Works/Wastewater Committee meeting on Monday.

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Larry Chenoga, and Borough Manager Ben White gave an update on the leaf collection that has been taking place.

White reported that this is the third week for leaf pickup and said that overall, it has been a pretty good leaf season.

White also reported that the H20 project has practically been completed.

The final touches will be a bit of restoration while the borough awaits grant reimbursement from the state.

Young Punxsy collector finds himself a new fancy

PUNXSUTAWNEY — One of Punxsy's most well-known collectors is back at it, and this time around he's putting a new spin on an old trick.

After collecting a license plate from each state from cars, Douglas Bartlebaugh, a 17-year-old Punxsutawney Area High School student, decided it might be time to start collecting a miniature version of one of his old favorites: motorcycle license plates.

"My uncle gave me a Pennsylvania motorcycle plate, and I already had all the states for the cars, so I figured it was time to start something new," Bartlebaugh said.

Anthony Carmen Tersine, 98

Anthony Carmen Tersine, 98, of Walston, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born Oct. 27, 1914, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Peter and Louise (DeFloria) Tersine.

He was a member of Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church in Walston.

On Nov, 6, 1943, he married the former Goldie Elizabeth Stuchell.

She preceded him in death on March 27, 1994.

Tony enjoyed gardening, watching Western movies and going grocery shopping.

He was a life member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Punxsutawney.
