"Punxsy youth rally" held at PAHS

The combined youth groups of the Christian, Missionary and Alliance Church; First Church of God; Salvation Army; and First United Methodist Church in Punxsutawney sponsored a youth rally Sunday at the Punxsutawney Area High School gymnasium. Mike Hammer, youth pastor at First Church of God, said the purpose of the rally was to have a safe event where students could come, interact and have fun. He said he wants students to realize that just because something is church-related doesn’t mean it’s boring.

Dr. John Francis (Jack) O’Leary, 94

Dr. John Francis (Jack) O’Leary of Bel Air, Md., pharmacology researcher, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2012, in his home. He was 94.

Jack was born in 1917 to John T. and Winifred Embert O’Leary in Punxsutawney. He graduated there from Saints Cosmas & Damian Parochial High School.

One of 10 children, he was the first in his family to pursue higher education.

After receiving his B.S. in biochemistry from Penn State University in 1942, he was employed by Keystone Ordnance in Meadville, Pa., in the manufacture of TNT for the U.S. Army.
