Punxsy XC teams cruise to Senior Day wins over Brockway

The Punxsy girls cross country team ran its record to 7-1 with a 15-50 shut out win over visiting Brockway yesterday on a beautiful fall day that was ideal for running.  
The team also recognized its lone senior, three-time state qualifier Alexis Young.

“Alexis has had a great career so far, and I know she would like to end her senior cross country with a district team title and her fourth consecutive trip to the state meet,” said Punxsy girls coach George Wehrle.

DuBOIS – For the second time this fall, the Punxsy girls' tennis claimed a District IX runner-up. Amber Ward and Lauren Wolfe teamed up for a second place finish in the double championships held in DuBois on Tuesday afternoon.

In the opening round, Ward and Wolfe received a bye into round two. The other Punxsy double entree of Kylie Krise and Jaelene Burkett picked up first round victory. The Krise/Burkett pair claimed a 10-3 pro-set win over the Bradford duo of Nicole Henderson and Ashley Stoltz.

Punxsy calmly blanks Kane Volleyball in home sweep

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For the seventh time in eight home matches, the Punxsy volleyball dispatched its opponents in three games.

The Lady Chucks calmly blanked their second opponent in as many night in a 3-0 defeat over the Lady Wolves of Kane on Tuesday night.

The Lady Chucks (11-3) disposed of their opponent by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-22.

With the win, Punxsy has now won 21 of 24 games played on its home court this season with the lone defeat coming at the hands of AAAA powerhouse Altoona.

School board upping facility use fee on weekends, holidays

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area school board approved a motion to add language to the current facility use policy, covering the extra costs associated with use on weekends and holidays.

On weekends and holidays, Business Manager Susan Robertson said, the facility use fee did not cover the expenses of the staff.

Work progressing on borough sewer projects

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The fall construction season is winding down as Mealy Excavating & Construction has been performing restoration work on West Mahoning Street and Horatio Street, following the installation of new sewers.

The West Mahoning Street project is completely finished, and the Horatio Street project is coming together quickly, Brian Sekula, of the EADS Group Inc., Punxsutawney Borough engineers, said at Monday's Punxsutawney Borough Council meeting.

Sekula said the base course has been put down, and Mealy will put the wearing course on Horatio Street on Thursday.

With colors like this, who could resist snapping a photo?

While the majority of the fall foliage has yet to turn color in the Punxsutawney area, there are a few trees ahead of schedule, like this one pictured on Route 119 in Bell Township.

When those leaves hit the ground, Punxsutawney Borough will be ready.

The borough is scheduled to begin leaf pickup with the leaf machine on Monday, Oct. 22.

Robert Henry Rand, 69

Robert Henry Rand, 69, Saltsburg, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 24, 1943, in Fort Fairfield, Maine, a son of Floyd and Mary (Dishong) Rand.

Bob was an electrician and longtime employee of Don Huey Construction.

He had also previously worked as a coal miner for Lady Jane Collieries and Tunnelton Mines.

Bob was known as a hard worker who took pride in his work. He was known for his kind, loving and outgoing personality.

Bob was also a very patriotic individual.

Melvin Dean Steele, 70

October 9, 2012

Melvin Dean Steele, 70, of Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at home.

He was born Feb. 6, 1942, in Home, Pa., a son of the late Alvord Boyd and Irene (Johnson) Steele.

On June 20, 1964, he married Marsha Jane Shelley. She survives.

Dean enjoyed working with wood, watching racing and helping his friends.

Lady Chucks posts 10th win, shut out Lady Rovers VB

PUNXSUTAWNEY – With the home stretch of the season set to begin, Punxsy equaled its volleyball win total from last year with the 10th victory of the fall, 3-0, over visiting Brockway on Monday night.

The Lady Chucks (10-3) started slowly winning the first game, 25-21, put things together a bit better in the second contest, 25-18, and finished strong, 25-10, for the sweep of the Lady Rovers. The win completes the season sweep of Brockway as Punxsy won, 3-1, on Sept. 6 on the road.

8th-grade Punxsy GBB takes 2nd at DCC Tournament

DuBOIS – After a solid 32-18 win over St. Stephens Friday night, the eighth-grade Punxsy girls' basketball team edged Marion Center, 25-23, before falling to host DuBois Central, 25-12, in the championship game of the 27th Annual Father Gregory Leopold Tournament.

"It was nice for the kids to play in the finals of the DCC Tournament," said Punxsy coach Mike Carlson. "We wish we could have played a better first half. The girls took second and should be happy with how they played most of the weekend."

With the 2-1 weekend, the Lady Chucks even out their record at 7-7.
