PUNXSUTAWNEY — In what has become an annual happening, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Ebensburg Unit and Community Action, Inc. are once again teaming up to put together this year’s Toys for Tots drive.

 FEMCO Machine Company became a partner in the campaign last year, and this year will be no different with FEMCO and Chambers Replacement World also assisting with the drive.

RIDGWAY — Mission accomplished! The Punxsy boys' cross country team set its season goal of reclaiming the District IX title and made it become a reality with a complete team effort on Saturday afternoon in Ridgway.
Althea M. Peace, 83, Reynoldsville, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at home.
She was born Dec. 24, 1928, in Elmira, N.Y., a daughter of the late Herman Murray and Iva Bliss Murray.
Dec. 24, 1946, she married Robert C. Peace, who preceded her in death on April 30, 2002.
Mrs. Peace was a homemaker. She was Protestant in faith.
Surviving relatives include a son, Gregory W. Peace and wife Cynthia of Reynoldsville; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Marlin Murray of Reynoldsville.
Helen Eileen Rishel, 82, of Punxsutawney, passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, at DuBois Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 10, 1930, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Isaac M. McKee and Emma M. (Cole) McKee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine E. Rishel, on Nov. 12, 2009.
She was a member of the Scotland Avenue Church of God in Punxsutawney.
Mrs. Rishel was the co-owner of Wholesale Auto Parts before retiring.
She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Robert J. Shields, 83, of Rossiter, Indiana County, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012, in his home.
He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Norma (Mains) Shields; father of Bobby Shields, Bill Shields, Linda (Matt) Messina and Albert Shields; grandfather of Michael Messina, Candace Shields, Nicholas Messina, Samantha Shields, Thomas Messina, Valerie Shields and Lisa Messina; brother of Teresa (Edward) Fitzroy, Kitty Pivirotto and the late Sarah Shields.
He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Trunk-or-Treat at the First Church of God will be held inside of the gym from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.
If school is closed that day, there will be no Trunk-or-Treat.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy mayor Jim Wehrle has declared a declaration of disaster emergency in the Borough of Punxsutawney effective Monday at 6 p.m. to enable staff and related officials to respond effectively to any possible impact of Hurricane Sandy in the borough.
The storm, which will begin to hit the mid-state area sometime Monday evening, is expected to bring heavy rain to the borough and region, resulting in low area flash-flooding and wind-related power outages, which could last for several days. Sustained high winds will likely contribute to tree damage around the borough as well.
The Punxsutawney Area School District has cancelled all classes for Tuesday, October 30 due to the forecasted weather.
Also cancelled are all sporting events for tonight, Monday, October 29 and tomorrow, Tuesday, October 30.
RIDGWAY — After falling just short the past two seasons, the Lady Chucks captured a convincing District IX cross country crown on Saturday in Ridgway.
Punxsy ran away with first by 28 points, 31-59 over runner-up Clearfield. The two-time defending champion Bradford was third with 64 points, while St. Marys completed the field with 67 points in fourth.
“I certainly thought we had an excellent chance of winning, but I surprised at the margin of victory,” admitted Punxsy coach George Wehrle. “The girls proved they were for sure the best team in the district this year.”
