ST. MARYS â The distant future of the Punxsy girls' basketball program looks to be promising. Last weekend, the sixth-grade Punxsy/SS.C.D. squad kept its perfect season mark by sweeping three games with a 27-17 victory over Johnsonburg in the championship contest to win the Elk County Catholic Tournament in St. Marys.
Kate Horner led the team which is now 15-0 on the season with 14 points. Cassidy Reed hit for five points, while Emily Griebel and Kylee Shoemaker both added four points apiece.
KARNS CITY â In a close game, turnovers can prove to be very costly, and the Chucks learned just how true that fact is on Friday night. Punxsy committed its third turnover of the second half, and Karns City turned it into a Zach Moore 32-yard game-winning field goal with 49 seconds left in the game to give Karns City the 17-14 win in Karns City.

ANITA â The week of Oct. 7-13 has been designated National Fire Prevention Week, and Friday, firefighters from the McCalmont Township Volunteer Fire Company treated the students at Parkview Elementary School to a special program about fire prevention safety.
Six different members from the department â Assistant Chief Chris Porada, Captain Kevin Toven, Pete Mohney, Blaine Heckman, Justine Foster and Derek Toven â gave an interactive presentation to the children, grades K-3, teaching them the importance of knowing what to do in case of a fire.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Jefferson County, which some people believe may not have anything to do with them or anyone they know.
That belief, though, isn't necessarily true.
"Domestic violence is the occurrence of one or more acts between family or household members, sexual or intimate partners or parents who share biological parenthood," said Suella Himes, counselor advocate III for the Community Action Inc. Crossroads Project.

Mary M. Shields, 92, of Brookville, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at McKinley Health Center in Brookville.
She was born Feb. 15, 1920, in Rosehill, Scotland, a daughter of the late Thomas Frew and Elizabeth Reid.
Mrs. Shields was a graduate of Grover Cleveland High School in Buffalo, N.Y.
She was married on Dec. 12, 1942, to H. Glenn Shields, who preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 2001.
Mrs. Shields was a member of the Brookville Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. She was active in ministry all her life, leading womenâs groups and mentoring young women.
Donald James Smith, 88, known to his family and friends as Jim Smith, passed away on Oct. 2, 2012, in Carson City, Nev.
He was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Juneau, Pa.
He graduated from Rossiter High School, Class of 1942.
Jim was married to Vivian Dunlop Smith, of Rossiter, for 50 years. She preceded him in death.
Jim served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was retired from Minneapolis Honeywell, Inc. after 35 years.
He was a lifelong member of the Masons.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â After posting its third-straight victory last Friday, the Punxsy Chucks squad will look to pass another road test against the traditionally tough Karns City Gremlins.
âKarns City is a fantastic program,â points out Punxsy head coach Alan Nichol. âThey have won a good amount of the District IX AA championships and are a solid program.â
The two Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference Large School Division co-leaders have produced very similar 2012 results to this point of the season. Both squads have 2-0 marks in the KSAC Large School Division and have 4-2 overall records.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Another week and another perfect outcome was the order of business for the Punxsy seventh-grade girls' basketball team.
The Lady Chucks won three of four quarters on the way to their third win of the week, 21-14 over Altoona-Maroon on Thursday afternoon in Punxsutawney.
"What a nice, hard-earned win against another quality opponent in Altoona-Maroon," said Punxsy coach Darrin Kriebel. "The girls definitely showed everybody in attendance including the visiting team just how far they've come as a team this year."
