Punxsy MS XC completes home slate, runs at Ridgway

PUNXSUTAWNEY – The Punxsy middle school cross country runners have been showing great progress this fall.

The young harriers had two runners, Brady Young and Alexis Vite, in the top 10 at last Saturday's Ridgway Invitational before closing the home slate with a good showing Tuesday afternoon.

Last weekend on the boys' side, Young ran to a sixth place finish on the 1.7-mile middle school course. His time of 10:17 was fast enough to earn him one of the T-shirts given to the top 10 finishers.

Chucks stomp Raiders, 43-6, on 9th-grade gridiron

PUNXSUTAWNEY – If you missed the first quarter, you missed the game. The Punxsy Chucks ninth-grade football team stomped the Brookville Raiders with 41 first quarter points on the way to a 43-6 decisive victory Wednesday night.

Alex Young scored three of the Chucks (6-0) six touchdowns with a 60-yard opening kickoff to go with two long scoring runs of 40 and 35 yards.

Braxton Giavedoni found the end zone on both sides of the ball. He raced into it from 45 yards and intercepted a Raiders' pass to take it 42 yards.

‘I Can Cope’ to bring hope to those with cancer, loved ones

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Jefferson unit of The American Cancer Society (ACS) is sponsoring another session of “I Can Cope,” to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at the IUP-Punxsutawney Campus on Center Street.

"I Can Cope is the largest single free educational program for adults facing cancer, either personally, or as a friend or family caregiver within the year," said Peg Henninger, R.T.

Henninger said the ACS has been doing this for nine years.

"We've done so well with it because our committee just gels together," she said.

The classic children's show Sesame Street has been in the news of late after being a hotly debated topic at the first round of the 2012 presidential debates this year, but Sesame Street is in the news in another, less-conventional way today as well.

Ladybug Day is the reason the show is receiving national attention today, and a visit to ladybugday.net — a website put together by the Gordon family of Redwood City, Calif. — explains just why today is such a monumental day.

No injuries reported in two- vehicle accident on Route 119

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — There were no injuries in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 4:41 p.m. Wednesday on Route 119 across from Pasquale's Restaurant in Young Township.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, a 1999 Ford Escort, driven by Brett Toven of Anita, was traveling north on Route 119, when Toven failed to see a 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by John Waters of Rochester Mills, stopped in front of him waiting for a third vehicle that was making a left turn into Pasquale's Restaurant.

Bernard Eugene “Pokey” Smith, 84

Bernard Eugene “Pokey” Smith, 84, guest at the Jefferson Manor, formerly of Brookville, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Jefferson Manor surrounded by his family.

Mr. Smith was born Jan. 7, 1928, the son of the late Percy Parker Smith and Leona Geer Smith, in Grange, Pa.

Feb. 9, 1949, in Punxsutawney, he married Wilma Grace Pearce, who preceded him in death Oct. 13, 1998.

Mr. Smith was a World War II US Army veteran — Hq. Co. #1 Det. Ft. Jackson, S.C.

He worked as a miner and later retired as a caretaker for Deemers in Brookville.

Punxsy XC teams cruise to Senior Day wins over Brockway

The Punxsy girls cross country team ran its record to 7-1 with a 15-50 shut out win over visiting Brockway yesterday on a beautiful fall day that was ideal for running.  
The team also recognized its lone senior, three-time state qualifier Alexis Young.

“Alexis has had a great career so far, and I know she would like to end her senior cross country with a district team title and her fourth consecutive trip to the state meet,” said Punxsy girls coach George Wehrle.

DuBOIS – For the second time this fall, the Punxsy girls' tennis claimed a District IX runner-up. Amber Ward and Lauren Wolfe teamed up for a second place finish in the double championships held in DuBois on Tuesday afternoon.

In the opening round, Ward and Wolfe received a bye into round two. The other Punxsy double entree of Kylie Krise and Jaelene Burkett picked up first round victory. The Krise/Burkett pair claimed a 10-3 pro-set win over the Bradford duo of Nicole Henderson and Ashley Stoltz.

Punxsy calmly blanks Kane Volleyball in home sweep

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For the seventh time in eight home matches, the Punxsy volleyball dispatched its opponents in three games.

The Lady Chucks calmly blanked their second opponent in as many night in a 3-0 defeat over the Lady Wolves of Kane on Tuesday night.

The Lady Chucks (11-3) disposed of their opponent by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-22.

With the win, Punxsy has now won 21 of 24 games played on its home court this season with the lone defeat coming at the hands of AAAA powerhouse Altoona.
