Punxsy picks up win, but struggles on the mat
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Although some follow the old adage, "The numbers never lie," Tuesday night's wrestling match between the Chucks and the Clarion Bobcats proved to be a counterexample to the theory, with the Bobcats falling 30-21 to Punxsy despite only losing one match on the mat.
Marred by injuries, Clarion's squad dressed just five grapplers Tuesday, and four of the five earned victories.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Over the weekend, the town of Punxsutawney — more specifically the Punxsutawney Area Community Center and SS.C.D. — hosted 14 different sixth-grade basketball teams, both boys' and girls' for an annual tournament.
Four different Punxsutaw- ney teams participated, and others traveled from Marion Center, Brookville, Penns Manor and as far away as Butler to participate.
No tournament champion was crowned in either division, but each team was guaranteed three to four games to gain valuable experience.

DA: The blood cries out for guilty verdict; jury hears it
BROOKVILLE — In his closing statement of Steven P. Rebert’s double murder trial Tuesday, District Attorney Jeffery Burkett invoked the voice of one of the victims, Wayne Shugar, and asked that the jury hear that voice, as well.
“The blood of Wayne Shugar cries out in this courtroom,” Burkett said, citing evidence that showed four spots of Shugar’s blood on the bottom of Rebert’s work boots.
“Your DNA is the content of your person: It’s responsible for your eye color, your personality, your height,” he said.
BROOKVILLE — During his closing arguments in the seventh day of Steven P. Rebert’s double homicide trial, defense attorney and public defender John Ingros told the jury that it has seen more than 300 exhibits and heard testimony about the victims’ kitchen, knickknacks on the counter, the locations of “every door and window,” the yard, where the vehicles were parked and even an incomplete bedroom on the second floor of their home.
But, Ingros asked, “Are you any closer to helping you decide” Rebert’s innocence or guilt. “What did you really learn?
BROOKVILLE — A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Jorden M. Bogacki, 27, Reynoldsville, on escape charges.
According to Jefferson County jail Warden Tom Elbel, Bogacki was sentenced to 45 days of jail time to be served on weekends in 48-hour periods.
However, Bogacki failed to report to the jail Friday, Jan. 20, and has not been located since, Adult Probation Officer Adam Oakes said.
According to Oakes, Bogacki works in the area and has served several hours of his jail time so far.
State police have been notified, and warrants have been issued for him.
E. Eugene (Gene) Elbel, 82, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at home.
He was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Rossiter, a son of the late Edward and Alice (Smith) Elbel.
June 25, 1949, he married Dorothy E. (Smith) Elbel, who survives. They were married 62 years.
Mr. Elbel enjoyed gardening, hunting, traveling and watching sports.
He was retired as a heavy equipment operator.
Gilbert Michael “Junie” Piszker, 77, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
He was born Oct. 7, 1934, in Anita, a son of the late Gelly and Annie (Reves) Piszker.
He was a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church.
Mr. Piszker was a friendly and kind-spirited man. He enjoyed playing the lottery and keeping track of sports.
In his younger years, he was a member of the Anita Baseball team, and he liked paint-by-numbers oil painting.
